Some Questions For Ultra Marathoners

Considering attempting ultras next year/Year after (Eventually24 hour race)
New to this length. Marathon is as far as I have gone so far.

1/ Can you recommend a good technical book with training plans, preparations, pitfalls etc. I've checked Amazon etc but am unsure what to go for.
2/The idea of a track (400 metres) 24 hour race appeals to me. Can anybody recommend a good one in Europe that they might have run. Is the Hull 24 hour race in July still going. Cannot find any dates for this year online. I have emailed the club but never got a reply.
All advice is appreciated and thank you in advance.

I don't know of any books with training plans and the like. http://www.ultrunr.com/ is a decent site though, google is your friend as well.

Noake's Lore of Running has some ultra training programs and is very technical. To be fair, it covers pretty much everything...

 Off topic but that reminds me of this.

    Now I've heard everything! :)

As for books, the only book that deals with ultra training in any real shape I have ever come across is Noake's Lore of Running, as mentioned by Krusty.

Worth mentioning that a couple of our boards posters are heading off to represent Ireland in the forthcoming 24-Hour World Challenge & European Championships, in Brive La Gaillarde, on the 13th and 14th May.

Have a look at this one in London - was involved in supporting it last year and a well run and accessible event that I would highly recommend.

Hi Lecheile, Is the Brive race on a track or circuit?

Noakes is worth a read for sure. I've never tried a track race but it's on the things to do list.

Depending on what distance you're aiming for I think at first doing some back to back long easy runs at the weekend whilst maintaining your marathon training schedule is a good starting point to transition to ultras.

    Say goodbye to your weekends!

Hi Lecheile, Is the Brive race on a track or circuit?

The race is run through Park Brive, 1.2km loop. It will present more variety than a track race and the organisers describe thus - "We are confident that you will fall under the spell of this scene!" - I know one particular individual who will be getting a kick in the ar$e if he starts admiring the scenery!!

The Lore of Running is your bible, its spot on for essentials like nutrition basing it on real numbers rather than some generic one-size-fits-all.

Also there`s some useful calendars here with the dates and websites so you can find one to suit yourself and when you expect to peak....
