Not sure how I feel about it being a prequel shot with a non digital camera in the past as speculated in those links.

Although I did have a World War II scenario floating around in my head that basically went along the lines of the atomic bombs dropped on Japan being a hoax, and the real weapon was one of the aliens.

Or that the atomic bombs dropped were not to end the war, but to stop the alien as the allies realised that it would be capable of getting to them after finishing with Japan.

Well at least a prequel might explain where the monster came from and why.

    At the end of Cloverfield
the alien was seen falling from the sky and into the sea in the background of the camcorder footage
    .

    Also the creature in Cloverfield
was basically a baby alien according to Abrams and was just suffering from seperation anxiety

The Abram approved Manga spin off went off on a bit of a tangent though as
it had the aliens living under the sea near Japan and they were able to react to human emotions through an orb.

Yeah I was gonna say somethin about the bit at the end
on the ferris wheel where we see the thing fall from the sky.

But that doesnt tell us anything at all. We still need to know what the creatures are and where they originated from, etc. etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,406 ✭✭✭PirateShampoo

I thought it was a satellite that falls from orbit owned by a Japanese media company.

Then again, maybe it won't be explained and it doesn't actually have anything to do with it?????

Probably not though. Also isn't there apparently
a Dharma Initiative logo seen in the credits somewhere??

It's be cool if there was a connection to Lost.

where did you get this from? as far as ive heard its always been referred to as a japanese owned satellite

in this cloverfield wiki it says its definitely supposed to be a deep sea creature and it was a satellite seen falling into the sea
Many speculate that it is of extraterrestrial descent, but this has been denied by J.J. Abrams.

According to film producer J.J. Abrams, the creature is officially “...a baby. He’s brand-new. He’s confused, disoriented and irritable. And he’s been down there in the water for thousands and thousands of years.”

Where did I get which bit from?

The Abram interviews are on the US edition blu ray of the film, and the Manga spin off was approved by Abrams as a tie in with the film, can be picked up online or in a good comic book store, and it went into more detail on the creatures and their eggs in the sea near Japan.

On both IMDB and wikipedia it says that it was a Japanese satellite that fell into the ocean at the end.

I have no problem with what is said on Wiki or IMDB. You asked me where I heard what I said, I just replied by saying it is said by Abrams in interviews on the US Blu Ray of the film.

Maybe Abrams gave other interviews about the satellite falling into the sea, I'm just going on what he says about his film in the blu ray I have.

Wait, in the article he says it "is absolutely connected to 2008's Cloverfield" But it's not a sequel.

so what exactly does this mean? Maybe the Connection is just that it showing it from a video camera style like Cloverfield.

Wither way i'm kinda interested now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,510 ✭✭✭sprinkles

That wasn't a quote from JJ but a quote from the article in "Vulture". This article then goes on to say he rubbishes that suggestion with him saying "But it has nothing whatsoever to do with Cloverfield, despite your expert reporting.""

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,608 ✭✭✭irish_stevo815

Ah yes, spot on. Should have read it properly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,315 ✭✭✭Big Knox

    Cloverfield 1 Spoilers:
The object that fell from the sky in the end of cloverfield was confirmed as a japanese satellite. After it fell into the ocean the company sent a deep sea mining team down to try and retrieve it from the ocean floor and it was when this team went down that they awoke the creature. Abrams himself while always remaining tight lipped about the exact details did confirm the creature was not from a different planet and was always on earth!!!

I haven't seen Cloverfield since the cinema...all this talk makes me want to watch it again!

Kinda glad the films aren't linked, Cloverfield should just be left alone!

Ah the joys of the internet. Shaky cam version of the trailer. Not ideal but gets the point across.

Abrams directing gives me quite a bit of hope for this. I wasn't the biggest fan of Cloverfield, but it had some good moments. If they do indeed film this on Super 8 - don't know how likely that is - then that would be one novelty I'd be interested in. Teaser suggests another alien attack sort of thing anyway.

The trailer is kinda cool, doesn't give much away for now but it seems like the world will be under attack form an escaped alien/s of some kind.

Cool to see Steven Speilberg involved too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,510 ✭✭✭sprinkles

Shaky cam version of the trailer.

It wouldn't be the same if one of the cams wasn't shaky!

    Official Trailer (non-shaky!):

I have huge respect for Abrams.. loved everything from his TV efforts (Felicity, Alias etc.) to his movies (Star Trek, Cloverfield etc) to his fascinating TED Talk.

Looking forward to this.. despite the obligatory and un-necessary "Produced By Steven Spielberg" credit!

At least it's not the irritating 'Presented by...' crap!

Hard to draw any kind of conclusions from the teaser, but I'm a fan of both Abrams tv and films so far, so count me in. I'm very glad it's not connected to Cloverfield - I liked it, but a sequel would see it overstay its welcome I think.

It looks like the same approach though; an ambiguous teaser, keeping it mysterious etc. The marketing behind Cloverfield was very enjoyable, this is one to keep an eye on.

I'm pretty sure every film is produced by that man these days ;) Since said credit is also attached to the Transformers films, it's pretty safe to say it means sweet FA too.

However, J.J. rarely puts a step wrong so I'm not too concerned!

I dunno. Cloverfield's teaser trailer was perfect trailer imo: a tiny little short-length feature that set the tension and mystery (I still remember the monster's deep, wheezing groan that quietened the party - shame they never used it in the full movie, it really sent a shiver up my spine). It sucked you in quite shamelessly. "Oh it's just some dull indy drama movie with bori....ohmygodwhatwasthat?"

Super 8's teaser is just ... bland. A CGI powered train crash (who is in that truck that crashes into the train? Why did it do that?), some generic "conspiracy" text & something (presumably) big kicks open a carriage door. What's to get excited about?

Hmmm, obviously not good grammar anyway. However, I think that JJ never gives much away and all this trailer does is let you know that there's another monster film coming out.

Now I don't know about you, but I for one, love monster films (the last Godzilla film excluded for obvious reasons). So for me, that's exactly what I'm excited about.

Or maybe he is just trying to throw us completely off track? You never know with the J.J

How does that work out? A baby, but at the same time it has been down in the water for thousands of years?

Anyway, I am encouraged by the trailer for Super 8, I hope this isn't like Cloverfield and repeats the formula of constantly keeping the monster/alien out of sight. It's not something I want to see again, thankfully from the looks of it since there is no hand-held camera BS it means I'll get what I want.

The much-anticipated sci-fi film Super 8, written and directed by J.J. Abrams (Star Trek) and produced by Steven Spielberg, will be released June 10, 2011, it was announced on October 27.

The film stars Kyle Chandler (The Day the Earth Stood Still) and Elle Fanning (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), and several newcomers.

Plot details remain mysterious, but the alien-themed story, set in 1979, pays homage to some of Abrams' favorite movies as a kid, including Spielberg's films, such as Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T. The idea has a group of kids playing around with Super 8 cameras who accidentally capture something sinister on film.

This scheduling puts the film up against Fast Five, the action sequel with Vin Diesel and Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, and Something Borrowed starring Kate Hudson.

Abrams still plans to produce sequels for Star Trek, which he is likely to also direct, as well as Cloverfield with Matt Reeves (Let Me In) directing.

Getting a very old school Spielberg vibe from that trailer. Which is good. Think the CGI looks a bit iffy, but I lap up most things Abrams puts out so I'm on board for this :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,200 ✭✭✭✭Basq

For a film that's only four months away from release, this is the first juicy bit of footage we've gotten. And it's only 30 seconds.

Old school Spielberg vibe + Abrams = me there!

Looks good, but I hope Abrams eases up on the anamorphic lens flare. He became so obsessed with it on Star Trek that he added it to almost every scene digitally. It was annoying.

Well, I'm glad it's not another shaky cam monster film. I got a kick out of cloverfield's novelty factor when I saw it in the cinema, but it really did not stand up to repeat viewing.
