Protein Flapjacks

Hey guys, Have experimented with making a range of flapjacks + energy bars that are 95% paleo. Tony in crossfit had a fantastic flapjack recipe that always turns out well and obviously transform flapjacks are fantastic. I'm trying to see if I can come up with a recipe that I can tip a rake of whey into (have some handy choc isolate) so that I can have some nice high fat high protein low carb snack readily available. Anyone have any good references? I tried to make these but they were absolutely horrible (and nowhere near the protein levels I was after!) http://www.marksdailyapple.com/primal-energy-bar-redux/ Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I wouldn't say that that MDA recipe is particularly healthy, heating up a load of PUFA in the form of nuts and nut butter then adding in sugar to glycate any proteins in the nuts is a really bad idea for a start.

Sorry not directing this at you in particular but I've been thinking about this lately..

<high horse>You'd be better off just enjoying the real thing every once in a while rather than trying to concoct 'paleo' versions of modern food. They never taste the same and they're never that much healthier than the real thing either.

That's what happened with the low carb movement, it started out with a pretty good prescription of eating vegetables, meat, dairy and nuts and then the food manufacturers started to climb on the band wagon and slap 'LOW CARB!!' labels on their products by replacing high carb flours with soy and wheat gluten, needless to say most people didn't lose weight eating this way and the 'fad' was confined to diet history.

I really don't want to see the same thing happen to Paleo.

Real food tends to look like real food. </high horse>

I completely agree and share a similar disdain for a lot of the rubbish out there that passes for lowcarb! However: the aforementioned tony@crossfit flapjack recipe contains only: mix of nuts coconut pumpkin seeds coconut oil some dried fruit almond butter and taste absolutely incredible. No heating required and no frankenfoods involved!!! Really a perfect snapjack. Just interested in upping the protein in these fellas and seeing is there a proven way of doing it without me ruining €10-€20 of nuts/oils in my crazy idiot experiments.

In that case I'd enjoy the recipe as is and just have a protein shake afterward. I've never seen anyone successfully use protein powder in a recipe, the taste is just too distinctive and tends to dominate no matter what you couple it with.

Any time I add protein to stuff it just ends up way too dry, pancakes are the only thing that was acceptable. I made a protein shake today with some milk and cold coffee and it was like an iced coffee, much more pleasant and acceptable than brownies I've made in the past. Trying things like that, whether it be a bit of diet coke or some ginger ale or whatever might be a better way of mixing it up wrt protein and still having something that tastes ok.

Thanks guys. Will stick with making high fat flapjacks and high protein jerky. Or maybe beef flapjacks...

Opened this thread hoping to see a great recipe where you could use Protein powder. I've got some really rank stuff that I was hoping I could somehow cook with but given the above I think I may forget it!

Might try the coffee idea, think it might be strong enough to mask the rank taste;)

Trying mixing it in Jelly or adding greek yoghurt and whey to the jelly after you put in the hot water (not immediately after though) and then whisking it all up and letting it set.

I laughed when I read this because I've butchered so many recipes with protein powder it really struck a chord with me! BUT there are a few that will work and John Berardi's second book has a few brilliant recipes that successfully incorporate protein powder. Strawberry pudding, Almond Bars etc. all turn out pretty good. Then again they don't have to be cooked either.
