On a couple of occasions we've seen discussions get derailed or disrupted by posts regarding Irish-born players playing for England. In an effort to prevent this becoming an issue every time, I propose the following:

    1. A stickied thread, entitled "Why are Irish-born players playing for England or other nations?", the first post of which will contain an explanation of the situation (I'll write this), and state that normal discussion of this is allowed only in that thread. Normal meaning constructive & logical, not emotive tribal rubbish.

    2. An amendment to the forum charter, allowing 1-week forum bans for posting on this topic anywhere but in the stickied thread, with longer bans for ignoring this or acting the idiot.

This should allow us to discuss the cricket in peace, leaving the politics & emotions in a single thread, which will be carefully policed.

I'll leave this discussion thread open for a couple of days, and if reaction is generally favourable I'll set things in motion. You can indicate your opinion on the poll, and if you've a constructive suggestion, post on the thread.

NOTE: for the next couple of days any other threads on this topic will be locked on sight.

EDIT: I'd like this thread to be about the changing of the forum charter, not debating the topic itself. If/when the stickied thread is created, all inputs will be welcome there.

Should we limit discussion on this topic to a single thread? 16 votes

Good idea, set up the new thread

i think that if you are a young irish lad[or lady]and you are good at cricket, you would want to play with or against the best in the world, and if the offer came up to play for a world class cricket country, you would be a fool not to jump at the chance

I want the ECB to feck right off and start actually developing their own players rather than taking punts on foreign born players in a blanket fashion to see who comes good.

I want the ICC to ammend the rules so affiliate players who do not make the grade (because of rubbish english selection policies) can return to play for their own teams.

Other than that I am sad to loose top players like morgan and Joyce.
I am scared to see Boyd and Dockerill rated so highly by england.
But I begrudge them not at all.

in the world of cricket ,you will find many players playing cricket for countries that are not their birth countries, some maybe like ireland havent a world class cricket team, others like remember[basil dolevera ?] who couldent play cricket for south africa because of racism, there are also some white west indian cricketers who will never be selected fo the west indies ,i would also think in the future , as cricket in ireland developes english born cricketers will be picked to play for ireland,

I agree it's a good idea - the last thing we want is important match threads sidetracked as nearly happened last night

BTW - it was good to see such a good turn-out, and some new "faces" in the cricket forum last night

Agree 100% with this - thanks to all who made the effort to explain things to those who asked politely, that's exactly what we need to gather new people to the fold here.

Must have been one of the longest single-match threads in this forum, pity the result was kinda anti-climax and disappointing, but exciting nonetheless..

If you had a chance to play for your fav footie team on the telly would it stop you. Many Irish players play in england and Some players from england play for the Irish teams. ... Works both ways. Ireland is not as big country and are not professionally equipped.

the way cricket is run in england is still run by the old boys network, not will very many working class kids ever get to county standard ,those who do often never get to reach world class its still very much, a when were you at oxford kind of sport, any person who is of a good standard coming from other countries never face that school tie discrimination

    :confused::confused::confused:

I'm from Yorkshire, and I can categorically say that hardly any non-working class kids get to county standard there (I can't think of any in the 40+ years I have been following the game!) - and there are probably more Yorkshiremen in the county game than from any other county. There seems to be something about the game that gives people such fundamental misconceptions - perhaps it's because there is such a focus in and around London

Anyway, this is going off-topic - I understand the intention is to start a new thread to discuss the underlying issues of international eligibility and "transfers".

Folks, I'd like this thread to be about the changing of the forum charter, not debating the topic itself. If/when the stickied thread is created, all inputs will be welcome there - until then, please comment on the charter change only here please.

    Thanks

    Sorry.

Most members here want to talk about cricket. Its a small following but an exciting time to be a fan. I suppose its a good sign that so many People ae aware of the Morgan/Joyce issue but its something that is naturally going to play on the the minds of faux nationalist type.

An exclusive thread would give a good basis for controlling this element, while giving a resource to help the genuinely curious to understand why its happening, helping clean up the other threads and allow discussion about the threat about future occurrences.

Its a good idea TrueDub, I voted yes.

    Voted yes.

A lot of people new to cricket would not be aware of the circumstances regarding Irish players declaring for England and will feel the need to question why they do, just not in threads about matches and other topics. I see nothing wrong with them doing so in a superthread, good idea Truedub.

Fantastic idea TrueDub. Its needed for a few reasons...those genuinely interested can find out the reasons why and while they may not agree entirely will at least help understand...it saves the regulars on the forum having to continually explain the reasoning behind players decisions...those who use it as an excuse to troll will no longer be able to derail threads and annoy forum posters.

    Well done sir.

Right, I think we've got a sense of how people feel, so I'm going ahead with the charter change and stickied thread. Thanks to all for their input. I'll lock this thread now - anyone who has any other suggestions, please feel free to PM me.
