Hi ,I'm using my current phone ,sony ,for browsing the web during the day and checking my emails and m.boards.ie

I have a laptop ,but in my line of work it's just not visable to use it (dirty hands) ,during the day.

Thing is I'm not sure to buy an iphone or not ,biggest reason holding me back is ,I'd love to try the ipad. I can't justify buying both an iphone and ipad ,so not sure what to do.

Will the ipad be expensive and is the iphone really any good ?

    Thanks.

When it's eventually released here the wi-fi iPad will probably start at €499. 3G one at about €600.

iPhone is a great little computer, and a phone, but can suffer from poor reception. iPad is a toy but in your case with a screen protector could be a useful tool if you need access during work hours.

I take it you have never used an iPad?

I have mine about a week now and the only time I use the laptop is for development work. For everything else I use the iPad.

You mentioned dirty hands as part of your job.
Iphone has superior touch screen to anything out there on the market. When I say superior I really mean it , if you compare iphone to anything other there its way ahead of anything. Maybe new HTC has come close second but iphone is still well ahead of any competition. So for browsing web and typing things it would be ideal.
Downside of iphone is that suffers occasionally from poor reception compared to the other phones. Casing also can develop hair thin cracks, but if under warranty Apple will replace your iphone. Iphone has indicator for the moisture and if this paper goes red Apple will refuse to service or repair your phone. I’m mentioning this as you said you have a dirty hands, hopefully not wet.

Exactly, a toy. Not a work tool. If I had one we'd use it in kitchen for recipes, livingroom for casual browsing. But I'd carry my netbook to meetings (it has flash!!!) and use my desktop for longer browsing sessions and work.

Thanks for the info ,the iphone sounds good ,not sure it will withstand the abuse I might give it though.
Most days I'm climbing in and out of attics and sometimes my phone is in my pocket.

Is it so thin that it may get damaged ,if stressed a little ?

The screen won't stand up to much. A friend of mine dropped hers once and the screen shattered. It had a case on it and it still broke. Too fragile if you ask me. Everyone drops their phone at some point or another.

The HTC Hero has a better screen, but it isn't as good as the iPhone.

I think that the iPhone has the most solid build of any phone out there. Aluminium casing feels quite strong.

I think a big plus for the ipad for me ,is when I'm trying to sell work and want to show people pictures and stuff.

I can picture it laying flat on a counter top and being able to show people stuff ,without being crouched up to a laptop screen.
Plus I want to play with it and find out how it fits into daily life ,it looks cool:)

Love love love my iPhone. I rarely use my laptop now. Only downsides are: no Flash (no Farmville!!!) and you can only Bluetooth with other 3G iPhones, ie: can't use the Bluetooth function to print pictures at kiosks etc... But I still lurvvvvvvveeeeeeeeeeeeee it!

Get an iphone and get the Otter Defender case for it, it protects the screen and the phone, my job means I am often crawling through spaces and the phone gets a few drops and no bother.

That case looks pretty decent ,I've noticed people say that the reception can be bad sometimes ,have you noticed this with that case covering the iphone ?
Or is the problem with the iphone something to do with the software ?

With the size of that case, you should look at thye mophie juicepack. Its on the AppleStore. Include a battery pack which doubles the life of the iPhone on the go, as well as protecting the phone.

I think that case only protects the back of the iphone ? ,I'm use to batteries only lasting a day in phones ,is the iphone any different ?
Case is a little expensive for me.

Back and sides covered. Front then with a screen protector. New iPhone 3G is getting me nearly 2 days now, double that with the pack.

I think the case that jamesd posted about has a screen cover as part of the protection and it's a bit cheaper.

Not sure what model iphone to get ,simplest option seems to be the 16GB 3GS and get it for €99 on vodafone.

You can jailbreak the iPhone so it becomes a wifi transmitter and it would then allow the ipad to connect to it via wifi for Internet access
