    Hi,
I seem to have lost alot of distance on my irons in the last year or so. From 150m I used to hit a 7 iron, but now I'm struggling to get up with a 6 iron. I still hit quite a good drive (about 280/290 yards), so the tempo of my swing seems to still be there. I know you might say "just take an extra club" - but it's easier to be accurate with a lower club.
Any tips on why I might be losing this distance?

Could be climate change or age.

There could be a million reasons I suppose, but perhaps have the loft of your clubs checked to be sure that haven't weakened through use. Other than that, it would be much safer to go to a Pro somewhere and have your swing looked at. I would guess if your lofts are OK then you are not managing to keep your hands ahead of the ball through impact like you used to.

I have almost identical numbers to you (although I would be a more modest 265-275 with my driver) and have also had distance disappear over the past year or so. I know I am starting to cast ever so slightly so I'm working on trying to correct that.

Try hitting them harder and they'll go somewhere.

If you are hitting 280-290 yards confirmed with your driver then you have 2 swings, to only get 150 from a 7iron.

But that aside it sounds like unless you have recently changed equipment you should go and see a pro or post a video of your swing.

    150m=165 yards.

So why is he using yards to measure the driver and meters to measure irons?

150m with a 6iron is still above average I would say.
I'm not a short hitter and would hit a 6i from 150m off the fairway in summer. Do you get/expect roll are is this carry distance?

Also, my drives are proportionally much longer than my irons, I dont believe thats strange at all. At the very least, my driver has a graphite shaft.

Yeah that sums me up too!!

Im only a ten handicap but I know if I want to get lower its not about wheter im hitting 6 or 7 in, its about improving my awfully poor short game!

if your driving it that far and hit your 6i 165 yards i cant see any problem other than the course your playing must be an animal if you need 6i very often after a 290yd drive

What sort of ball flight have you got. I lost a lot of distance last year as well. I was hitting all shots with irons around the same distance. High short and to the right. Fixed it in 3 lessons. Changed to a strong left hand grip and a wider takeaway.

    Best of luck with it

Definitely think Jimmy is on the right track here. I had a cramped takeaway in the past that left me with a very steep swing and a high balooning ball flight that was murdered into the wind in particular.

Lessons may be the way to go once you can confirm no other equipment issues.

I would think that driver distance really has little or no bearing on irons anyway almost purely for the reason above. Any driver swing that is reasonably consistent will be fairly flat, but that doesn't mean you can't get steep with irons.

Out of interest, how are your fairway woods? If these are particular good while your irons are not, you may well be casting a little.
