    Want to buy a new android phone as a present. No idea what network it's going to.

    Do not want any contract or the phone locked to any network.

    Whats the best route ?

    TIA :)

    Meh, you get what you pay for. The Tattoo is the cheapest Android phone for a reason. It's a much smaller screen, with a resolution that some apps don't account for and hence won't run, it uses a resistive touchscreen instead of a capacitive one, and it's currently on v1.6 of Android with no plans to upgrade. But it depends on what you want out of a phone, and what you are willing to pay. Personally, I'd probably go for a Motorola Milestone (called a Motorola Droid in the US) on Expansys (€419) or a HTC Legend (€429). Or if you have any way of getting a Nexus One for a not-ridiculous amount of money, that'd be the way to go

    I've a Tattoo on sale on adverts.ie.

    If you're looking for new then what about the Samsung Galaxy Spica on 3 - it's €249 (€15 to unlock) and runs android 2.1

    Thanks for that .. (wrt €15 to unlock), what do you ask for a prepay and then ask the sales assistant if he will unlock from three ?

    Anyone any experience of the phone ? :)

    Does it? 2.1 is "due to be released any day now", but it's been like that since March. Are the 3 ones being sold with 2.1 on them?

    I have the Spica, pretty happy with it (other than the interminable wait for 2.1). One downside is the relatively limited internal storage available for apps. I have a little over 100 apps installed and now have to uninstall if I want to install more. Having said that, I do have a fair amount of unnecessary apps installed (5 browsers, various GPS apps I don't really use, a couple of emulators that take up a fair bit of space)

    @newphone - I used fastgsm.com to unlock the spica - worked a treat.

    @28064212 - I got mine last week and it has 2.1 on it. I read that there is a method to manually upgrade to 2.1 if you don't want to wait.
