    Hi,
at the stage now where door frames have arrived along with skirting, etc.
We are planning on painting the skirting and all the woodwork except doors,
but I've been given different advice, guy in the paint shop says just to paint them directly, it's red deal. but the guy who sold me the skirting says it, needs
primer, undercoat and a top coat.

    which should i do ?

With all softwoods I would knot stop a couple of times, two coats of undercoat - light sanding between coats, and at least 1 finish coat.
The easiest way to paint skirting however is by spraying, and should give a more consistent finish.

It may sound obvious but paint the skirting boards before you install them, its so much easier.

Yes, i will be painting them before they are fitted.
But using Dulux SatinCare for wood and it says that no undercoat is required

It may be no harm putting an undercoat on it but I used that Satinwood for the interior of the shed last weekend, I just gave it two coats and it did the job!!

These one coat products are aimed at the occasional DIY home user. You'd never see a professional painter giving bare softwood one coat and walking away happy.
As I said above, knot stop, prime and finish coat (multiples of each is best).
