Handheld scanner question.

    Hi all,i have a scanner for listening to ATC chat etc etc,however when i put in Galway airports frequency(122.5) in and around the Castlebar area its blocked,go a few miles outside town and its grand.any ideas why?theres a phone mast in town,would that have anything to do with it?

    i only get the blocked freq on the scanner on dub (118.6) when passing a cop shop

    Phone masts operate on totally different frequencies to Airband.

    VHF is line of sight. In town there's lots of buildings to block the signal. If you're close. The strength of the signal is better. The further away you aware the more likely the signal is blocked by something. Outside town, perhaps on a bit of high ground you get a better signal. It could be as simple as moving a few yards.

    Years ago when I had an airband radio. You could get Dublin ATC in some rooms of my house but not in others. The same was true of my mobile phone.:rolleyes:

    Ya i have the same thing on my scanner in castlebar, its not that its poor signal, its something is transmitting on that frequency. Its a high pitch beep, its like a TV channel got off air.
