Supposedly you can leave them open and because its the Android OS it apparently doesn't use much memory or power but I beg to differ so I use the ATK myself and you can see memory resource jump up a fair bit after closing the programs

Don't go crazy with the task killing though. All it takes is one app that's in the middle of writing to your sd card and your sd card may get ruined.

There's an issue with Task Killer's and the clock app on the Nexus One too where the alarms may not go off when a task killer has been used.

There is no way shut an app in Android without using a task killer. The developers designed it so that Android would kill processes itself if it needed the ram.

There is a way to kill an app using manage applications but that is far too long winded to be useful.

As a developer I would advise against using any kind of task killer on Android, since there is no way of actually stopping an Android application these task killers are basically hacks into the operating system and can be the cause of more harm than good.

The Free ram I have available with most the apps off is about 200mb's is this normal ?

Im guessing the other 368(?)mbs is used for actually running Android.

Its the same on the desire, the task killer will kill the alarm even tho its been srt.You need to but it on the ignore list on ATK.

This is true, but certain bugs in applications leave task killers as the only apparent option. For example, on a Desire running 2.1, occasionally an alarm will go off but the dialog and the notification become hidden, so there is no way of stopping the sound without killing the task. Similarly there are a few applications that forget to disable location services after they are backgrounded.

The way TaskKiller and others work, with a convenient button that blows away all processes is not good though.
