Is anyone here old enough also to remember and/or actually also see the bread queues alone in Russia in years gone by.
My that was so depressing. How glad was I then to appreciate the flight back home out of that hell.

...And for what they called supermarkets then, they were just shops filled with empty shelves.
    It was very depressing.

My experience of the actual Russian people was they were as we would put it "sound as a pound".
I remember times when waking up the next morning with them with a head that had been pounded with a bag of hammers (the drink the night before having done it!).
Darn that vodka snaps! LOL It wasn't the official good stuff either LOL.

I met genuine hard working people and despite the fact they had very little to give, they still managed to share what they had.
I am proud to have met such people.

They are very freindly, extremely friendly. But also a little bit too much "in ones face". They are also quite lazy and under educated.

But all in all a very nice race.

I met a few like that but they were usually the ones who thought they were something "special".
    They were - special gobschites.

Thankfully the vast, vast majority were decent, working people - irrespective of their level of education I might add.
Put them in our town and we would all end up getting drunk, crying, doing funny daft things and laughing together.
Of that, I never have (or had) any doubt.

    Incorrect, I know.

Did you do your time in the Army?
How do you feel about the rise of Islam in Russia and the fact it is expected to have a Muslim majority soon?

The largest mosque in Europe is in Chechnya.

The mosque in Moscow is not big enough so people have to pray on the streets.

The same thing happens in Saint Petersburg

I worked with a Russian who expounded a theory that as decadent western types we worried about stupid things (bizarrely he said this when we were discussing the suicide of somebody I knew) because we had never known real hardship.

I was watching an old episode of the Sopranos recently and a Russian character said basically the same thing.

So, in conclusion, this could mean:

    (a) All Russians think the same thing

    (b) My ex-colleague saw that episode of The Sopranos

    (c) I am a riveting anecdotalist

I like Russian girls, know a few through work.
Don't know any Russian guys, suppose they're ok.

Really really really don't like Russian mafia in Ireland, coming here with a single purpose - to exploit everything and everyone.

My impression of Russians Ive met would be of a very tough people, hard as bloody nails actually, a lot of intellectuals too, can be very religious, especially the women, quite traditional in outlook, hard workers, with a touch of the melancholia they share with the Irish. I've known Russian men, huge bastards that would happily head butt a shark, that would cry at the drop of a hat, especially with drink on board. :D Yea not too dissimilar to us on that score.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

How do you feel about the explosions in Moscow, i've heard Russians express the opinion that it was probably financed by Putin's finacial/oligrak group to tighten control over the country during the economic crisis. But the guy who told me that was a little nuts so I'm not sure how seriously to take him.

jesus, I can't believe this thread and additionally it's opened by a moderator!!!!!!

it's completely useless, and in fact encouraging racist/generalising statements.
you are asking people to generalise a culture. for what use??? people are individuals in their culture, no need to generalise.
here are posting people who never met russians, giving away statements from what they heard about russians.
some people who read this take this things for granted.

this is unelievable and it really upsets me, that this is possible here.

I would like the thread to be closed!

In fairness, change "Putin" for "Bush" and such like minded thinking people could be from the states!

Do you understand what a generalisation is?

Do you expect people to give opinions on each and every individual Russian they have met instead of just a broad picture?

Whether or not anyone thinks any of these answers are generalizations, some interesting information to have would be what the purpose of this question is, which maybe the OP can answer please? I think some backround on the story is needed to gauge the sincerity of the poll! Maybe he's writing an article on the perception of Russian people from a different perspective/from another country/from Russia?

I have had the dubious pleasure of having met and spent time with 2 Russians , they both turned out to be cnuts.

What the rest are like I have no idea.

I wonder if they are on the Russian versions of Boards saying they met me and I was a cnut , I hope they wouldn't generalise all Irish people because of me.
