People are always parroting on about scumbags this and scumbags that. What is the opposite of a scumbag? A "goodie goodie" would be my guess.

So are you a goodie goodie how loves being ordered around?

    Lol.
What makes you think that the opposite of a scumbag is somebody who likes to be ordered about?

Generally I find that scumbags are the ones who get ordered about,
as they are completely braindead and have about as much education as a ripe turnip.

Law abiding citizen is a good enough term.

"Rabbiting" Gemma that's the word you should have used.

"Parroting" means repeating things others say, Gemma, and is totally different from"rabbiting"

"Rabbiting" means doing things incessantly like erm boning other rabbits.

Now before you start your next thread get those simple things right.

    Rabbit

    Good woman.

Ah, Bertie is a politician. It's a different sort of scumbag, as all politicians are not only scumbags, but get highly paid scumbags.

An ordinary decent person who obeys the law and is a good member of his community.HE/she helps his friends/ neighbours and is a good example,eg
he pays his taxes ,doesnt rip off the social welfare ,does not buy drugs,or illegal cigarettes or encourage others to carry out crimes in any way.
I would regard the bankers as criminals, those who borrowed millions from their own banks to buy shares ,and are now trying to evade paying back the loans, thus leaving the taxpayer to pay for loans.
Also those who manipulated loans, transactions in order to make the bank accounts look better , to enhance the share price ,they ripped of the
    shareholders/ bondholders.
IF this was the usa these people would go to jail.
I believe a banker who borrows 20 million and then does not pay it back does more damage to the country , the the average gouger who buys abit of hash now and again and will probably grow out of it in a few years.

Most people don't obey the law because they love being ordered around.they do it because they realise that (the majority of) laws are there to ensure a fair and functional society.People respect the law beause it's the decent and morally correct thing to do and not because they're too afraid of authority or too spineless to rebel as you have insinuated.

I acn only speak for myself, but i wouldn't rob or assault someone even if it was legal and i wouldn't get punished for it.I think that the majority of the population would think similarly.

    Opposites..

    Clean - dirty
    Hot - cold
    Wet - dry
    Big - small
    Fat - thin

    Scumbag - Goodie goodie

Somehow, that really doesn't work at all.

no I was saying the opposite altogether. The majority of people, imo obey the law for reasons other than that which was suggested by the op.She implied that the only reason people obey the law is because they love being told what to do and I was disputing this.

Obviously "Scumbags" don't love being ordered about. They hate all authority and attempts made by society to control them and so break the law and rebel often by doing stupid things for no apparent reason.

By that definition, then everyone who breaks the law or hates authority, is a scumbag.

ok was just the way you phrased it, I get what you meant now. Still no idea what were trying to argue about in this thread. What's the opposite of a scumbag? A decent person aka everyone else? :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 942 ✭✭✭whadabouchasir

I said that if someone were to break the law for no apparent reason thereby not caring about the effect that their actions may have on others then they could be called a "scumbag".Tbh if a person hates authority then that person has problems of their own.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,739 ✭✭✭✭starbelgrade

If you break the law for no apparent reason and don't care what effects you're actions might have on others then you could be called a "scumbag".also if you hate authority then you have some issues.

Authority is not always something to admire & is something that should always be open to question, especially when it takes too much power from those it is supposed to represent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,778 ✭✭✭✭Kold

I suppose it's opposite would be 'decent human being'.

Scumbag is a term to describe a mindset as far as I'm concerned. It has nothing to do with law as law doesn't determine decency. It has to do with attitude, personal ambition and the way in which one is happy to carry oneself. Scumbags are notably selfish and lack courtesy and compassion. So yeah, 'decent folk'.
