Thinking about travelling to Syria, any suggestions on places to see, and more importantly is it safe considering the Middle East can be politically volatile and finally i like to have a few beers/ glasses of wine on holiday wondering the sale of alcohol situation is like in Syria i.e is it resticted to tourist hotels.

    Welcome to Boards Regprescott :)

Asking is anywhere safe is like trying to answer how long is a piece of string- things change in some countries at the speed of light. But in the main Syria is safe so long as you avoid any political gatherings, which isn't hard to do.

The best attractions there are probably the Crusader castle 'Crac du Chevaliers' and the Roman ruins at Palmrya. Damascus is also worth a few days too.

As regards alcohol well it is available in Syria, especially in hostels, tourist hotels etc. But the locals don't really like seeing westeners falling around the streets drunk so its done mainly behind closed doors and kept that way.
