Why is there a draw for the Heineken Cup Semi Finals?

I've always been confused as to why the Heineken Cup semi finals are decided based on a draw. One team gets that cruical home semi final based on pure pot luck. This doesnt seem right.

So much of a big deal is made about getting a home quarter final. The amount of points won throughout the group stages is crucial to achieveing this. So why on earth does the ERC not use the same system to seed the semi finals? Why dont they reward the teams who performed the best during the group stages? They do this in the Challenge Cup so why not in the Heineken Cup?

Of the 4 teams left in the competition after the Quarter Finals have been completed they should be re-seeded 1,2,3 and 4 based on the amount points gained in the group stages. 1 v 4 and 2 v 3. 1 and 2 getting home advantage.

This seems like the logical thing to do, and is a system used in many sporting competitions around the world, such as the NBA and Stanley Cup.

I just cant understand for the life of me why such a random system is put in place for deciding who gets such a massive advantage. Surely it should be determined on merit, not based on luck.

I remember Llianelli in 2007 being the No. 1 seeds after the group stages, and hammered Munster in the quarters finals. Despite all this they end up with an away semi final to Leicester. Not fair.

This isnt in response to the fact that Munster and Leinster got away semi finals this year. I'd think it was unfair on Toulouse and Biarritz if it was the other way round. I just do not like the system, doesnt seem fair, and CAN be open to manipulation.

To be honest the semifinals should be two legs ,home and away ,its the fairest option.

Not at all, doesn't work for rugby.

I'm with you on this one OP - I was fairly sure I'd suggested it before so I checked my old posts and it was on a thread back in January around the time that the 1/4 final draw was taking place.
A few people seemed to think that it gave too much of an advantage to teams who'd had an easy group.
