Edit Registry in MS-Dos?

First of all, the problem I have is not related to a virus as such. Or if it is it would be highly conincidental. So if someone has to move this post, my apologies, but I couldn't find a more appropriate forum.

Okay, so in trying to stop My Documents from automatically opening everytime I booted my computer (which I know isn't a big deal) I edited the registry as mentioned on numerous websites to people with the same issue (here's one such page - http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/28466-35-home-documents-automatic-display-boot). The advice given was "Go to Start>Run type: regedit and Navigate to

Using Regedit, change the following key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS NT\CURRENT VERSION\WINLOGON
    Change USERINIT from
    C:\windows\system32\userinit.exe,c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe to
    C:\windows\system32\userinit.exe,

When I checked the registry all I had was userinit.exe, without the C:\windows\systems32\ before it. So seen as alot of sources claimed C:\windows\system32\userinit.exe to be correct, I added the rest in before it. Turn my laptop off, boot it up, shows my wallpaper, then immediately logs me off. When I try to log back in I'm logged back out straightaway. I then look this problem up on another computer and it turns out that this problem is related to the userinit.exe I edited in the registry!

So I obviously need to change this value back but can't get to the desktop. I've tried using recovery console but XP doesn't recognise my hard drive so I need to get the drivers. This method seems like alot of hassle as Seagate don't have the drivers up on the site (I've emailed them), plus my laptop doesn't have a floppy drive so I'd have to burn the drivers onto a new XP installation disc. So I'm hoping there is some way to boot in MS-Dos and edit the registry throught that? Anyone had to do this before or know if it's possible?

By the way - Dell XPS M1530, XP Pro..... can't think what else is relevant.

    Thanks in advance!
