Dunnes sirloins are a lot cheaper and the quality of Dunnes steak has improved hugely recently plus you KNOW its Irish grown and not just "produced in Ireland". Support Irish growers/breeders as much as you can.

That beef is as Irish as the stuff you get from Dunnes so by buying it you will be supporting Irish farms.

    +1

The label on this steak clearly has a Quality Assurance (Bord Bia I think) seal of approval on it going from the pictures.

'Liffey meats Cavan' is on the label.

40% of food in aldi is produced in Irealnd - neither Dunnes or Tesco can get close to that. Lidl's figure is just under 25%. - figures from checkout mag ast december

I can vouch for this steak,i have had it twice recently and it`s melt in the mouth.
Dunnes beef is great too,i had their diced beef the other week it was on offer and it was really good,i just avoid their mince.

An irrational perception. Local irish meat plant that I know of dealing with lidl, tescos, etc. There is no difference.

As regards those preferring to buy irish beef, well you will NEVER really know what is truly irish beef and what is not - due to the fact that all they have to do is slice a slab of beef in half and they can then label it up as irish.

I don't think like meats from any of the supermarkets ,half of the stuff is green.

Get your meat in your local butchers!

Somebody with sense at last. Anybody that thinks "There is no difference." between meats from various suppliers really need to have their taste buds looked at. Meat from a good butcher can't be beaten. There's nothing "irrational" about it.

    Marketing man's dream.

You are making a foolish statement here that doesn't have any relevance to the actual debate in question...which is...judging these Lidl steaks on their price alone.

If you want to go on some big general rant about who does the best beef, pork, chicken or whatever then start a thread in the food forum.

A trite catchphrase but last I checked my local butcher doesn't have a marketing team. Tesco, Lidl, etc all do and spend loads on it. Who's falling for the marketing? You, I think.

Judging it on the price alone? That's pretty foolish in my opinion - price is all your worried about eat sawdust, I hear it's really cheap.

No, value not price is what you should be concerning yourself with. And I've never had supermarket steak that was a patch on what you'd get from a good butcher in terms of value. That's a subjective opinion admittedly.

You mentioned between supermarkets, don't backtrack now.

Value, yes, nothing wrong whatsoever with those Lidl steaks. You should try them.

Sorry ,I know this is bargain alerts but.
If anyone ever buys even small items like rashers in a butchers ,they'll notice the lack of phosphates that always seem to come from processed meat.

Factories have all sorts of stuff at their disposal ,to beef up meat.

I could also have said I dont like the meat products from my local butcher..

LOL the irrational misguided nature of the internet ;)

It's a blatant sweeping generalisation so it is.
Their meat is on par with other supermarkets and their cold meats selection is better than that in other supermarkets imo.

    Curious logic

The guy said that Lidl's meats are of a poor standard.
If they are on par with other supermarkets, does this not imply that said competitors also have poor quality meat?

Just because I can get the same "gray after one day" meat in Tesco doesn't make what Lidl sell acceptable to me.

I dont mean to get off topic. Its still a valid bargain if people personaly perceive it to be. Its just not for me.

Also you are right, they kick the big-guns asses when it comes to cooked meats.

Dont see the problem with sunny2004's comment. I shop in Lidl all the time and have tasted enough of the bread to know that I dont like the bread in Lidl. Nothing to do with where its made or how inexpensive it is.

we buy halal only for the past year, so much fresher/nicer tasting, cheaper

Those steaks in lidl yesterday were much nicer than any i have gotten from Super-Valu or Centra in a long while ;)

I would certainly have them again

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,011 ✭✭✭Prefect_1998

got 3 packs of steak and were great, butchers in the family said about 10% fattier than best butcher sirloin cut, but at about 50% cheaper, and yes irish beef slaughtered to humane careful standards, would not give halal to my dogs.

    Indeed it has! :D
But we're just offering out opinions on the stuff.
Personally I'm a huge Lidl fan, They are so superior to the likes of Tesco in many many ways. .... I'm personally just trying to be more selective on meats these days (which I can only afford to be because Lidl save me so much on everything else! :P )

I can vouch for Lidls steak folks!

I bought a monster slab of beef from Lidl one day last week, i chose to grill it rather than fry it, but lads the steak was absolutely melt in the mouth stuff!
Far superior to sirloins I've picked up in Tescos before!
I admit to being a real sceptic to meat in Lidl before, and indeed theirs just some stuff I wouldn't eat from Lidl (processed chicken kievs for staters) but as long as this steak has been sluaghtered/bred in Ireland I will continue to buy my steak from Lidl!

Lidl and Aldi are the best thing to happen to Ireland in a long time, shaking up the competitors and forcing some of them to stop being rediculous with their prices (anyone remember 1€ peppers? Aldi sold 3 for 1.65)
oh, and as an added bonus what sup

I dunno about you but I would much rather be subjected to the German standard of meats than Tesco or Dunnes.

I'd be half-tempted to amend the charter with a rule issuing temporary bans to people pissing and moaning and treading the same ol' ground week after week in these Lidl threads!

This, the last 2 Lidl threads and the MaxRoam thread has really pissed me off recently.. this forum has started to really go to the f*cking dogs!

    Closed!
