How many good friends do you have?

Sometimes things happen that make you realise how many true friends you actually have. Something along these lines has happened to me recently and it was a shock and somewhat hurtful to realise that some of the people I thought were my good friends...well weren't. I know I'm better off knowing, I'd rather have a few good friends than loads of false friends.

I'd say I have about 2 or 3 people I would now class as true friends. The type that will be there for you no matter what and I feel lucky to have them.

So how many do you all have? Not including parents or siblings, relatives as they can make good friends too but people you've met through school, work etc

My close friends are the ones the i see outside of drinking. Out of the group of 20 or so people i'd regularly head out with i reckon only 5 of them are actually close friends that i could depend on for other things.

I've got my old best mates back in Ireland. Still in touch with those boys. We have know each other for 25yrs and counting.
Have a great bunch of mates here too. Got my back on everything, proven times.

Apart from that I have loads of friends too.

Facebook tells me I have waaaaay more though

I have a few really good friends who I would expect to have my back, I would hazard 5/6 of them. There are far more who I would have their backs, but couldn't really count on them to help me.

Yeah I know what you mean...however why would you be there for someone who wouldn't be there for you?

Thinking just now I would say I have 3 people that I could really count on completly to be there for me and that I could confide in and trust, after that I may have about 7 people who I would hang out with but I wouldn't be as close with. I am very cautious to whom I would trust as it has come back and bit me in the ass before. I am pretty happy with the 3 people I can trust.

Yeah I would be cautious too for the same reasons....am finding it more difficult to figure out who I can and cannot trust these days though....a lot of people seem to have their own agenda  But like yourself I'm happy with my small group :) I see some people with 20/30 friends that they hang around with and I honestly wonder how many of them could they actually trust.

I have my 3 best friends.

I still have friends that would have been my best friends back in primary school that I still keep in touch with and stuff but wouldn't be texting them every day or anything.

As the saying goes, it's quality, not quantity.

I have 2 best friends and 2 good friends

I hate pretty much everyone else I'm forced to interact with.

I have 5 best friends from college and 3 best friends from school. All would be the type of friends who would be there in a heartbeat if I needed them and I can tell anything to. Also have maybe another 6 or 7 who I'd be quite good friends with - would meet for lunch and gossip/talk about boy problems - and plenty of acquaintances also. I am also very close to other females in my family - mum, aunt, cousins - no sisters as I am an only child. Probably why I've gone out and made many close friends.

Unfortunately I'm bad with boyfriends though :(

4 good friends and my sister

Although there's only some things I'd tell either of those 4. The only one who knows me inside out is my sis

An interesting thing which is emerging here is the criteria which people apply in order to distinguish real friends from the others. Is "having my back" in all circumstances really a trait which one would want in a friend? I know people who are generous and helpful, but I don't have all that much in common with them, I also know people who would have no problem helping me out if I desreved it, but if I was in the wrong they would have no problem making that very clear, and they certainly wouldn't be leaping in to help me unduly.

I do think trust is important, but for me at least it has to be based on something more than some sort of mindless loyalty. The reason my friends are my friends is because we are enjoy each others company because we are sufficiently different from one another (or obstinate) to allow interesting conversation, we have respect for each other, and, probably due to a combination of the above, we are able to almost completely honest with each other. I say almost because I don't think anybody in this world is completely honest all the time.

So to answer the question, real friends, I have two.

Agnes: Seymour, are you looking at naked ladies on the Internet?
    Seymour: Of course not, mother!
    Agnes: Sissy!

    Sorry! :o

4 really good mates, 1 is recent enough but a few other friends similar to most people i'd say. You generally grow out of people and it takes a lot of effort to keep real friendships going

dont have any friends, only acquaintances caues the truth is that when push comes to shove basic instinct is to look out for your own survival etc and as a result your "friends" will turn their back on you/stab you in the back in a second if it will benefit them.

A possible exception would be familly or BF/GF or spouse but even this is rare if the situation is serious enough.

I have one really, really good friend. I'd do anything for him and I know he'd do anything for me. <3 Other than him, I wouldn't count on anyone else tbh. I mean, I have lots of friends, but no one quite like him.

My sister is my best friend and we speak daily...I have two really, really good friends at home who were my bridesmaids and we've known each other for 15 yrs or so...and here I have a group of 6 close friends whom I met when I went to a baby group and now our kids are in school together.

Two or three. These would be the people I would turn to when life seems to have truly gone arse-over-tits on me. Thankfully it's never happened, but I've been there for them whenever they needed me, and I'd hope I could rely on them in the future if/when I need them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,239 ✭✭✭KittyeeTrix

plenty of friends but really only one I would tell absolutely everything to:)

I only have 3 or 4 "good" friends, doesn't seem like many when I think about it:(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,248 ✭✭✭Slow Show

I'm not sure if I have friends that would stick with me through anything, or ones I would always be friends with.
But out of my circle of friends; I'd say I have three close friends, maybe four or five. These are the ones I can tell anything to.
