Any news from Apple as to whether or not they plan to release the iPad here? The fact they have huge offices here yet completely ignored this territory is bizarre. The UK get it at the end of May.

I've considered eBay but prices there are around €700 which is mental considering they will probably debut around €500.

No date yet. Probably wont be announced until after the UK release.

eBay isn't that bad. I got a 16gig WiFi version for about 500, and this was on release weekend!

The fact that there is an Apple factory in Cork has no bearing whatsoever on product release dates. Same goes for Microsoft, Intel, HP etc.

End of May is the anticipated date.

We might still get it at the same as the UK. And even if we don't, it should be fairly easy to get a hold of once it is out there.

I don't see what the big delay is for international orders? Can they not keep up with demand, or are they waiting for Carriers to sort out their networks (Micro-Sims)?

It takes them a while to ramp up production. They could have still gone ahead with the international launch, but it might have led to shortages in the US, which Apple wouldn't want. "We can't make them fast enough" is familiar cry of Apple anyway. It does them no harm.

I'd imagine it will be even longer before the 3g model is available here.

True, but it's odd how when an iPod is announced that they are usually released on the same day internationally. I didn't think the demand for the iPad would be bigger than say an new iPod Touch.

It is to do with the 9.7 inch screen, they just cant get the same yields as they would with smaller screens.

    hi mad
firstly i wouldnt bother with the 3g ..it will be too slow too frustrating and you'll have a bill for your troubles.
but no i love them ...best gadget to have by far. practically impossible to get hold of though. i went around every shop and spent a week on the reserve list. they are sold out everyday guaranteed. anyway day before i was due to leave i went back to the shop i had it reserved at and i was seriously lucky that the guy remembered me and was in a good mood and gave me 2 that should have been for others (i still havent got an email to say that mines ready to be picked up more than a week now) one is for my brother and the second im selling to try and cover some of the cost of my trip but i was in the states on a job interview and will be going back for good in a few months so il just buy another then...seriously though im dying to open it and play around with it but ill hold off. since they're so hard to get (and will be when they arive here too) i think its a good deal so check it out

Dunno, but you've always been able to get iPods engraved from the online store.

All will be revealed on Monday.

No, Apple don't offer engraving on iPads.

dunno why folk wouldnt go up north and get one now, it's gonna be more expensive down south, saying that, with the sterling dropping, it wont be a good a deal as it would of been at first.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 111 ✭✭georgiemcgrane

Was in London Monday to Wed this week - Apple Store had NOTHING - no ipads no iphone 4 - just a store FULL of people who would have gladly parted with > 500 to get a piece of apple wizardry.

I picked up an ipad in Dixons in Gatwick airport about 5 mins before I boarded my plane home. They had ALL models of iPad available. - Just in case anyone is looking for one or knows anyone coming back through the airport.

    Not so sure about that!

Eurozone pricing has been fixed so far from €479 - €499 (for the base model) although €479 is for countries that have sales tax AFAIK, so odds are it'll be €499 in Ireland.

Buying up North at £429 (for the base model) is working out at about €520 or thereabouts.

It's not much more all things considered.. but if you're in no rush for it, I'd say you'd be better off waiting!

"a source familiar with Apple's relationship with suppliers here in Ireland"

Its all speculative at best. Apple knows when they are going to release em, and nobody else. So it could turn up for sale in 5 days or 5 months. Although to be fair I think it would be safe to assume that Ireland as a consumer for Apple products wouldn't hold a lot of sway either way, were too small to be significant in terms of buying power. Prob do more business in London alone that in all of Ireland.

O2 store on grafton street told me this morning that iPad should be in stores before the end of July. Also should be sold in Currys at some point over the summer too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,195 ✭✭✭✭Basq

    I don't know about that..

.. it is odd how we've still had no confirmed release date or pre-order information from Apple if a release is imminent in the next 6 - 8 weeks.

Well that's still the official party line so he's unlikely to say anything else. I'm still worried.

That was a stroke of luck. Was that tax free? How much did you get it for?

I was going through Heathrow last week - and they were selling it for either £416 or £419 (for the base model).. I think the former.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 111 ✭✭georgiemcgrane

yea it was maybe 5 or 10 pounds cheaper than the high street price not by much though. Mind you they did have the entry level Mac Pro (that costs €1149) here for £889 there as well. Have to say Im really happy with it, Apple store in regent St was the first time I got a chance to play with it and its truly a fantastic piece of kit. No Regrets whatsoever. - Just got the 16gb Wi-Fi model, I have an Airport Extreme at home and its the best router Ive ever had, My Mac, iPhone and now iPad connect like a dream, even the PS3 at the furthest point it the house gets great coverage now where it struggled to maintain 15 - 20% signal before.

Same here, I had just strolled into their store, not thinking for a minute there'd be any when there they were. I was like a kid on Xmas moning and couldn't get my credit card out quick enough. I'd planned to wait till now but am so glad I took the plunge, would hate to checking every day to see when they're due.

I've been ringing around Northern Ireland and some parts of Britain for the last 2 weeks looking for an iPad to no avail.

I managed to get one last Saturday by luck. I rang the Apple Store on Victoria Street on Thursday afternoon to see if they had any 32GB 3G iPads in stock. They didn't, but put me on the reserve list. Got an email on Friday morning saying it was ready to be picked up. Went up north straight away and collected it. Quite a journey mind you! Its not fun when the car breaks down 5 miles from Belfast city and ends up having to be scrapped! But I digress. Luckily the store stays open to 9pm Wed - Fri I think. Cost me £599 + my girlfriends car :-/

The guy in the Apple store said I was very lucky to get one so fast, usually people have to wait several weeks before they get one :-)

I have been at the Apple store in Cork yesterday looking for the Apple leather cover for my Ipad I have bought abroad and they have told me that it will be out in Ireland end of next week together with the Ipad. So more unconfirmed information but the sales person seemed pretty serious about it.

Don't know if it is an official Apple store but it surely is an Apple retailer?

With a bit of luck they'll have them soon then, I think waiting any longer then another 2 or 3 months you might as well hang on till the next gen one comes out next year tbh

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 776 ✭✭✭Narcissus

It's unlikely that it'll be released here before the end of July, with the iphone 4 coming out on the 30th.

    Probably soon after though.

No, its CompuB, a reseller. And they told my wife a couple of weeks ago that they would have the iPad last week......

True, if it isnt released till September you may aswell wait until the next gen iPad, which will prob be released in January.

I was in the Apple store in Dublin today and they told me that they're "unofficially" expecting the iPad next week and they'd defo expect it to be here before the iPhone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,324 ✭✭✭chrislad

There's no Apple store in Dublin. CompuB is just a reseller.

It'd be unusual for them to have anything but a guess.

    I'd speculate that it's a guesstimate :D

It's probably based on the fact that Apple update their products every nine months or so. January is the Mac expo when new stuff is usually announced. However, as this is just an upgrade I reckon it'll be a little longer before iPad gets a revamp. I'd conservatively bet on an announcement before April, with an update early summer. I don't think we'll see a fully fledged iPad II for 18 months or more.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Entertainment Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 22,693 CMod ✭✭✭✭Sad Professor

Apple have no involvement with the MacWorld Expo anymore. They dropped out of it a couple of years ago.

Anything is possible, but it's wishful thinking to seriously expect a new iPad before April-June of next year. The iPhone and iPod are on a 12 month refresh cycle. There's no reason why the iPad won't be the same.

The iPad will launch here and 4 other countries this Friday, 23rd July!

It will go live on the Apple Store on that date however they where not able to tell me if it would be in Authorized Apple Sellers on that date also.

The 5 Countries it will go live in this week are:

    Belgium
    Luxemburg
    Netherlands
    Ireland
