Sure i hated him on telly and on the radio but my thoughts are with his family.

Very sad to hear this, I always thought Gerry seemed like a very sweet fatherly man, yes he had a sometimes odd sense of humour but that was part of his charm!

My condolences to his family xx

This is so shocking. I'm not a fan but he is a broadcasting legend in this country and it is always a shock when such a a larger than life public figure dies so suddenly. Did he have a heart attack then? Strange it wasnt on the news headlines.

    RIP Gerry.

Heart attack apparently. I won't be a hypocrite, as I did not like him on telly/radio either, but very sad for his family.

Nothing about it on the RTÉ news at 3pm. However BreakingNews has it and it's been confirmed on Twitter by the Today FM Newsroom and by Newstalk. Guessing RTE and other sites are waiting.

Huge reaction to his death on Twitter.

Just to echo what xzanti said, let's keep this civil. This is an RIP thread.

Haven't really watched/listened to him since the days of School around the corner and secrets, but I loved those shows as a kid. Sorry to hear it.

Can confirm there was nothing on the 3pm news. My hubby just sent me a text asking me if it was true?

Wasn't a huge fan but he was certainly a larger then life character.
    May he rest in peace.

That is very sad news for Gerry's family. I was never a fan of his, but hell, this is sad!

I would say that after Gaybo and Kenny, Ryan was the next most famous
broadcaster in Ireland over the past 25 years.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,689 ✭✭✭✭OutlawPete

Derek Mooney just announced it on RTE ...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23,718 ✭✭✭✭JonathanAnon

Irish news at 3:30 just said it there.. "Tá Gerry Ryan tar éis bhás" (sp)... Mooney says that they will carry on with the show same as normal and bring any updates.. very odd.

RIP Gerry, always came across as a great family man, this is what sticks out most for me.

Used to love his radio show but couldn't listen at work, so got out of the habit of listening. He had a great, silly sense of humour and always made me laugh, anyone remember the "3 oul' fellas" sketch he used to have on regularly?

Sympathies to his family and friends.

RTE have announced it now. I wonder if the LLS show will be changed tonight to some tribute? They might replay the time he hosted. Tub was a friend of his wasnt he?

Shocking news really, although he didnt look very well on his interview last night with Heather Mills compared to when I last saw him on telly on the LLS show a few months ago. Wasnt he meant to be taking over the Saturday Night show in September as well?

He was such a controversial figure - but very entertaining and never dull. I'll never forget him calling Gordon Ramsey a **** during an interview. He was a gas charachter and one of a kind, whether people liked him or not.

Hard to get the head around it..

Gerry Ryan became an icon on the radio, I always loved to tune into him, and usually had very interesting topics to discuss.

Very very sad to see him gone, he will be missed.

Used to goto sleep at night listening to his 2FM radio show from 10pm- 11pm before Mark Cagney's night train came on--- most who were a teenager in the 80's probably tuned into that show...great radio broadcaster...

Poor Family....RIP Gerry....thanks for the entertainment....

Ah listen, that's part of life. My brother died recently, age 44 - you wouldn't believe the crap I said to him over the years. But that's reality too. Life isn't all candy floss and Disney music you know?

RIP Gerry - very sad. :(
