HI, can anyone tell me how many hours and how much i can earn without my lone parents allowence and rent allowence been cut?, i have 3 kids and i want to get out and work part time.

There is a mis conception that you are only allowed to work a certain amount of hours when claiming One Parent Family payment. SW do not take into account the number of hours worked - you can work 100 hours weekly if you want to!! What is counted is your earnings. You can earn between €146.50 and €425.00 and still get a portion of OPF. The first €146.50 is disregarded, and the remaining amount is roughly halved and taken as means.

eg if you earn €200 pw , you are allowed €146.50, so the calculation would be as follows

€200 - €146.50 = €53.50. This figure is halved = €26.75. This equates to a means of €20 pw. There is also allowance for PRSI/Union fees/and PRSA.

So, it is well worth taking a part time job, as your OPF payment would be reduced by very little.

Make sure you inform SW when you start working, otherwise you could be assessed with an overpayment, once the data is sent over from Revenue.

Your rent allowance will be cut if you are earning. You will have to do a means test.
