Does anyone here know what time the results from the UK general election will start to come in? I'm thinking of staying up for them, but I have an exam on the morning of the 7th, so I can't stay up too late! Thanks.

As they are all single counts, I imagine the first will be available between midnight and 2am.

If memory serves me correct the smaller constituencies will start having results at 11 ish. By 00.30 there should be enough in to get an idea of how big the swing is, an hour later you'll be able to predict well over 90% of seats and have a very good idea of the final result.

Final result should be around 3 or 4 at the latest except for the odd constituency.

I'm predicting a Labour-Lib Dems coalition can't see the tories getting an overall majority.

I thought Clegg had ruled this out

Ya thought wrong, Clegg said the LibDems want to win outright. If not, they'll go in to a coalition with whoever will accept the four main principles of their manifesto.

Thanks for the replies. That's definitely a bit earlier than I would have thought. I'll stay up till roughly 2 - that should be enough to get a clear indication, and it gives me six hours of sleep before the exam.

Sunderland South (Chris Mullin's old seat), has this long running record of being the first constituency to declare, usually around midnight!

He did. But then his party told him to change his mind.

They'll have the exit polls etc at ten. Because of the system they will probably need a few results first to see the impact of the Lib Dem vote.

The North don't count the votes until the following day.

I wonder will they get their poll to leave the EU completely?

Having a referendum on Europe isn't one of their main concerns. They spoke about leaving EU in a kind of "well, let's ask the EU question as one big question, in a democratic vote" way.

The LibDems have never been anti-EU.

Love British Election night, results come thick and fast and the picture tends to be clear early on. Of course it'll probably take a bit longer than usual for a representative picture to emerge. Have a stupid exam meself the following morning, will involve getting up around 6am. :(

We know a few lads actively involved with the party and they seem to be fairly serious about it.

One swallow a summer doesn't make.

I know they floated the idea of joining the Euro, but this was addressed by Clegg, saying that if it was economically advantageous to the UK, they would put it to the people to vote.

I did think you're party logo was familiar...

Heh, there is no connection other than a genuine desire to resolve some of the endemic problems within our respective nations, which has led to a certain amount of informal interaction.

Hopefully it will throw up a few moments like this...

I was living in London at the time and could hear the cheers coming from the surrounding houses.

They are a great party to be in touch with. The closest we have at the moment in terms of how the party itself operates, is the Greens. Both have that "triple lock" system of ensuring party support. I'm a big believer that how a party treats it's own members is a very good idea on how it will treat the electorate.

I remember staying up just to watch Portillo being vanquished, it was the highlight for me. He's mellowed a lot more than I have since then.

Where in their manifesto does it sat they want a referendum on pulling out of the EU?

Liberal Democrats therefore remain committed to an in/out referendum the next time a British government signs up for fundamental change in the relationship between the UK and the EU.

They've said they'd campaign for a "yes" vote.

Interesting. I read that section and missed it. :o Probably because it wasn't a bullet pointed 'promise'. It doesn't appear to be a core issue. Their mini 4 pointer document makes no issue of it plus I didn't hear Clegg mention it once in the 3 debates.

In any event its kinda mute because the EU are unlikely to negotiate a new treaty in in the short-medium term. Even if the did that worded is vague enough to give them wiggle room.

If it was a case of them making a referendum on UK within Europe as a policy goal within the lifetime of the next Govt it would be a bit different. Thats what UKIP are after.

I would imagine that the Liberals will be looking for one big issue - electoral reform. If they can get a PR system than they are likely to be involved in Govts on regular occasion for the foreseeable future.

Not this time. For the first time they're doing it straight after the vote.

LOL, the UK leaving Europe and NI leaving the UK would probably lead to half a million people up there looking like OMG cat for 10 or so years when they realised what their economy was based on.
