E4 but no RTE???

I recently moved into a new apartment and I bought a new plasma TV. As far as I know it's got MPEG4 decoders, freesat decoders, every decoder you can think off.

Eventually I'm going to set up the freesat, (once I sort out some kindof tripod for the dish) but in the meantime I hooked up my TV to the Aerial socket in my apartment wall. AFAIK the apartment is all wired up for NTL/UPC in the usual monopoly deal but I figured I might still be able to pick up the terrestrial channels through the Aerial.

Here's where things got a little strange. I was able to tune in precisely 3 channels with perfect picture. E4, Ch4 and Discovery
Can't pick up anything else at all.

I read somewhere that NTL are required to allow their Aerial to be used to pick up the terrestrial channels for free but this may have been internet rubbish. Can anyone clarify what's going on behind the wall?

(apologies if this is the wrong forum, feel free to move elsewhere)

Either your tv has no VHF tuner or you may have installed the tv with the UK setting which may diable the VHF tuner as is the case with Sony models. Try reinstalling with Ireland set as the country.

The channels you are picking are in the UHF band and you require a subscription for the channels you receive through UPC cable.

Thanks very much. It could very well be the UK thing.
I will try it when I get home.

    EDIT:
So after searching around for a while I've discovered that it's because the TV I have doesn't have the VHF tuner (Bristish Panasonic).
This isn't really a problem I suppose as I should be able to get the Irish channels through DTT and the rest through freesat.

My next question now is will I able to tune in the Irish DTT channels through the aerial socket in my apartemnt?
I assume it's connected to some kind of NTL aerial on the roof but I'm not sure if that will pick up DTT?
I did a quick autoscan and had no joy before but I'm not sure if this is due to a 01 vs 16 issue that I'll have to look into seperately or just that I'm not receiving any sort of signal.

If thats not possible I saw mentioned elsewhere that rabbit ears might be sufficient? I'm in Dublin City Centre.
Or I could use an old VCR?

Didn't realise a UK TV would cause so many issues.

If it is an NTL socket then no. You will need an aerial pointing towards your local transmitter.

I'm also in Dublin City Centre, and have a UK Panasonic Plasma TV.

Like you, it only picks up E4, C4 and Discovery through the cable. However, as mine doesn't have MPEG4 (TH42PX60 model), it can't handle the picture on DTT; audio and channel IDs come through fine.
I use a standard internal aeriel that I picked up in Maplins, pointing it to Three Rock.

To get the analog channels, an old VCR or DVD recorder should be fine as long as it's got the Irish tuner. I just use the UPC digital.
