    Hello All,
Not sure if this is the right place for this query but im sure it can be moved to a more suitable spot later if its a bother.

My mother recently recived a letter in the mail telling her that she owed €837 euroes to a previous employer from 2.5 years back, this is how the letter went:
"It Has come to my attention that on resigning from *** the Technical Adjustment paid to you in July 2005 was not fully recouped.

I would however like to take this opportunity to provide an explanation of the Technical Adjustment.

    Group 020 - Group 022

    • Group 020 paid basic 30/06/05 for period up to and including 3006/05.
    • National decision to pay employees 11 days in arrears.
    • Group 020 became 022.
    • Group 022 paid 7/7/05 for period 13/6 to 26/6 inclusive: which is a total TA 14 days already paid for on 30/06/05
    • Paid 21/7/05 for period 27/6 to 10/7 inclusive which is a total of 4 days TA already paid on 30/6/05 (27-30/6 inclusive).
    • 18 days Technical Adjustment in all
    • Total amount which shows as a total on the end of payslip dated 18/08/05.
Your fortnightly salary at the time was €862.12 gross. €862.12/14 days x 18 days = €1108.44 gross technical adjustment.

€158.44 gross technical adjustment was recouped from your salary payment dated 08/11/07 thus leaving an amount of €950 gross, equivalent to €837.86 net outstanding. This amount now needs to be recouped.

Please forward payment of €837.86, payable to *****, to this office at your earliest convenience.

She was working for a public sector and obviously this has come as quite a shock to her. Is there any advice on what can be done about this or is she liable to pay after not being employed with the company for 2.5 years and being billed (from what I can see) for 5 years back?
It doesnt make any sense to me, so please any advice that can be offered let me know asap ;)

    Thanks in advance, Avenym.

P.S. I should probably have mentioned that the letter didnt come from the revenue or whoever deals with this sort of thing, but from the payroll deptartment of her previous employer.

Here is my 2 cents worth. Tell your mother to sit tight and not respond to the letter - for the moment. It's been nearly five years so far.

Without going so far as to give legal advice, I am posting a link to the section of the Statute of Limitations, which basically sets out that in most cases, there is a six year period to bring legal proceedings. http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/1957/en/act/pub/0006/sec0011.html#zza6y1957s11

Besides, these people took 5 years to send the letter so far. Who knows, maybe it'll be another year or two before they follow up.
