Be nice if this made existing tethered jailbreaks untethered without updating

comex is holding off releasing this until apple have released the ipad 3g to users. He is doing this becasue how quicly apple could respond and plug this hole they have found to enable this jailbreak.

    All good things in time

The GUI isn't finished yet, that's partly the reason too.

Within a few days folks. Make sure you back up your 3.1.3 shsh file to your harddrive AND sauiks server via the firmware umbrella (instructions on devteams blog).

Cue the cries of the people who buy iPhones right after Apple patches the hole :pac:

It will ,but this is were people will make the mistake and not have their SHSH files backed up in CYDIA or on their PC using umberella/tinytss , see this new exploit is expected to be patched quickly by Apple , when they do they will stop signing 3.1.3 firmwares (via iTunes )so if your phone crashes or needs a restore after you have used Spirit , and you don't have a shsh backup ,then you ain't gonna be able to jailbreak again for a very very long time (if ever)

Another fear is that to use SPIRIT alot of people will update their device to 3.1.2 or 3.1.3 officially and not have a backup .

A big emphasis is been put on getting a backup (more than ever) , it seems new exploits are getting harder to find .

So go backup those hash files if you have not done so.

    Probably a stupid question but...

I have an ipod touch 2g that I have never jailbroken but now want to. It runs 3.1.3 atm. Do I need to back up it's shsh ?

I think if you're already on 3.13 it's not that important. Once you jailbreak and install cydia you can have it back up your shsh for you.

Yeah, I really noticed that this time. A lot of talk about it. Once they're done through cydia you're good though, right?

I'm actually half seriously thinking of heading the android way. I have an opportunity to in the next few days for little or no money with an exchange for my iPhone 3Gs.

    /me runs

    /me runs
    /don't run ... Lol

When I seen the " found" 4G I was not exactly bowled over , and the Android looked more attractive , I will wait til the 4g is out a couple of month before I decide to make the jump.

On the shsh backups ... Yea having them on CYDIA is a great plus , but get umbrella and tinytss and save em on your PC aswell , you then have double backups.
The developer of umbrella is currently writing up a new GUI for umberella , it's expected in the next 2 weeks ... The current version is fine ,just alot of manual steps.
Spirit jailbreak is complete and ready for roll out , it's been held back til the 3G iPad owners have an opportunity to grab and save their hash files .

So how likely is this to happen in the next week I wonder? I've an iPhone 3Gs 16GB for sale but it's locked to Vodafone Ireland which is a bit of a restriction on who I can sell it to. Is a jailbreak complicated too? Would prefer to sell it to someone who knows how to do it themselves and is willing to wait a week or so for the release :)

    Cormie,
The last couple of jailbreak/unlock methods have been very user friendly and easy .
Only thing is that this "spirit" is a jailbreak and not a unlock (2 different things)
If your 3GS is running on 3.1.3 and baseband 5.12 then I expect it to be more than 2 weeks before we see a unlock fir baseband 5.12.

Thanks for the reply. Dang, I thought it was just a jailbreak I needed to unlock it. Thanks for the info anyway :) Guess I'll just have to find someone on Vodafone to buy it for now!

is it possible that spirit could relock an iphone, i'm with o2 and got it unlocked a few weeks ago

No it won't, once the iPhone is officially unlocked you will have no worries!

Will the new untethered jailbreak, also support an unlock?

No unlock in this release, we have to wait until the new iPhone release for another unlock.

For anyone who has not yet jailbroken their device there is a very easy tutorial here for getting your shsh blob using Autoshsh. Seems easier than umbrella to me and it also sends your info to cydia.

Nice find , only released today... Like the way it sends the files to CYDIA server.

Firmware Umbrella sends your shsh to cydia aswell, it's not that difficult. This program just makes it a bit easier.

Yeah it's just a bit more idiot proof than Umbrella for any n00bs like myself:)

It says it wil do 3.1.3 - does the Baseband matter as my 3GS is running on 3.1.3 and baseband 5.12

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

Interesting, so how can I unlock my phone to any network if a jailbreak doesn't do it can anyone explain? :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,464 ✭✭✭jamesd

Unlock depends on your version of firmware

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

It's on 3.1.3 as far as I know, just bought from Vodafone on the 9th of April. Will a jailbreak make it any easier for the people who code these kinda things to make 3.1.3 unlockable?

To be sure goto : settings/general/about , and post the following :

    version.
    Modem firmware.

Ive just done the spirit jailbreak on 3.1.3 and worked fine

Just had a look there and the details are:

    Firmware Version: 3.1.3 (7E18)
    Modem Firmware: 05.12.01
    Model Number: MC131B

So would it be likely that an unlock for all networks will come soon after the jailbreak I wonder or does the jailbreak have nothing to do with unlocking the phone?

Jailbreaking and unlocking are 2 different things , but are reliant on each other (can't unlock unless jailbroken), but both exploits are released seperatly.
Unlocking seems to be a little trickyer , I would say a unlock will not be released til it's known what modem firmware will come with firmware 4.0 ... That's expected in about 8 weeks time :( , cause if there was an unlock availble for 5.12 why would you release it now prior to a major release .

    So to recap :
jailbreak = exploit for the phone firmware e.g 3.1.3

unlock = exploit for the modem firmware e.g 5.12

Just did it - not a bother.

Getting all my apps back the way I like them is going to be a pain though :(

thanks mixednuts, I can't see why they would hold off releasing it for 8 weeks myself really? Surely it would get more use the sooner it's released? Or is it a case of Apple reconfiguring the devices to not allow them to work with the unlock?

They won't release an unlock now cause apple will just patch whatever hack they use to make the unlock. They'll wait until the new iPhone is about to be lauched, and release it then.

These days unlocks are few and far between .
Personally I think a unlock is harder to achieve and any exploit found is giving alot of consideration before been released.
Apples last move (3.1.3) was nothing more than a fishing exercise , it's main change was an update to the baseband , some Devs believe that it was an attempt to fish out the next unlock prior to 4.0 been released , hence the delay .
If they don't release an unlock now , who knows we could go into 4.0 with a jailbreak and unlock from day 1 .
That in itself is worth waiting the extra 8 weeks for.

    Hi Lads,
My Iphone 3gs is jailbroken and unlocked (thanks to Mixed). Its 3.12 & requires tethering to restart the phone when I turn off.

I have 3.13 SHSH back up in Cydia (think thats toe correct term)

Am I correct in what I have read in the forum that:
    1. I can update to 3.13 and jailbreak my phone
    2. Can't unlock yet though for 8 weeks or so?

From then onwards I will be able to turn on/off my phone without my pc?
Sorry I am nub at all this.

    Firmware Version: 3.1.2 (7D11)
    Modem Firmware: 05.11.07
    Model Number: MC131B

Thanks for the info. Don't think I'm prepared to wait the 8 weeks so will just shift my iphone as soon as I've a buyer I guess :)
