    im employed at the moment maybe not for longer.. they dont give references.
    most of my old employers have gone out of business
    what do i do?

    Try to make contact with your old boss (linkedin? facebook?) to see if you can use her as a reference?

    I use head of my department in college, as well as previous employer. Some people also use school principle if recently out of school.
