    Hi all,

I recently tore some cartilage in my knee while playing football. The football was just for a laugh and running is my no.1 sport. Unfortunately now I cannot do any running as I'm recieving treatment. The torn Meniscus was repaired and now I'm in a brace.
I would just like to hear from anyone who suffered a similar injury and how this affected their running as there seems not to be much online.

p.s. Mods I am not looking for medical advice. Just stories of how such an injury affected others.

    Thanks.

I tore my meniscus playing rugby last year but I didn't get it seen to straight away.

When I did get it done I was in a brace, same as yourself. When I got out of that I went to physiotherapy. Nothing major they just gave me exercises, like stretches, to do for a while to build some of the strength back up in my knee.

After that they used a machine to test my strength in both legs and then I did weights and squats until both my legs were similar strength. I'm only back to full fitness about a month so I'm in the gym just getting my fitness levels up. The only problem is that I can't run on the treadmill for long, it's fine when I'm running on grass or concrete but the treadmill still hurts.

EDIT: Just to clarify I don't normally do any long-distance running or anything, just Rugby but as I said it only hurts a small bit on the treadmill which they said is to be expected as when it's repaired it loses some of its 'shock absorption.'

i had 50% of my medial meniscus taken out in may '09,i took it easy for 4-5 weeks then started some exercises in the pool- stretches, squats and pool walking/jogging. around mid july i started jogging on road slowly and by aug did an 8km race and progressed from that to full in dublin in 3.46. i was told after op i would be back running in 4-6 weeks but i took my time and i believe thats what helped me get to full in dublin, dont rush it even if physio pushes you on,only you know your body.I still get pain in it now and again, but nothing to serious i hope.

    Thanks guys
It seems that recovery varies from person to person. Consider Joan Benoit who ran the US Marathon trials 17 days after her surgery:

    Crazy stuff.
    Anyone else with similar stories?
