This is great news, I never understood the love for the original movie.

I already have ideas how to make this better.
I think Miranda Cosgrove or Miley Cyrus should play Jenny and she should have a bigger role, maybe set up traps for the villians at the end when she's being held hostage, don't be so helpless.

Matrix needs to be played by a better actor, like Christian Bale or Sam Worthington maybe?
Get rid of the crappy one liners, so not funny.
Tone down the violence, be 12 rated like the latest Terminator movie.
Maybe get Paul Greengrass to direct?

Genuinely the worst idea for a remake that I've ever seen.

The commando succeeds where movies like "Roadhouse" succeeded. It doesn't take itself too seriously or pretend to be better than it actually is. It's pure and wonderful escapism.

My fear with a remake is that they'd try to do it seriously and make themselves look ridiculous.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,056 ✭✭✭✭BostonB

Its a cheesy bad movie, thats the attraction. Plus it was the 80's.

I was going to post a memorable quote. But it doesn't have any....

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088944/quotes

Must be really scraping for ideas if they want to remake that. Its just being lazy...

This is the worst idea for a remake ever. there just going to make a balls of it.

Theyll try make it to serious, what made it brilliant was the cheesyness of the 80.s and the level of violence which they rarely do these days. Theyll probably remake it and make it a pg film.

That was a pretty funny post. I was starting to weep inside, and then I laughed. That's an emotional rollercoaster I can really enjoy!

My only worry is if they remake Commando they might not recreate the incredible scene where Arnold has to get from a seaplane to the shore (it's what, 100 yards?) and to do so he strips down to a speedo, gets into an inflatable dinghy, rows to shore and then gets dressed again. You just don't get that kind of muscle-devotion in modern movies.

    This thread is funny.

Christian Bale and Sam Worthington were awful in Terminator Salvation.
Plus, Terminator Salvation is one of the worst films I have ever seen.

I don't think they should ever remake any film, how about some bloody originality?

I agree with some of what you've said here, but believe it or not I don't really mind remakes. Even though I make fun of a Commando remake, I generally feel like remakes can't harm the original, and if they're good they can be an interesting re-interpretation of the original.

I don't like how Hollywood seems to be obsessed with remakes and "reboots" lately but I think remakes are just a mainstay of cinema and I would hate to do without them.

A couple of my favourite movies are remakes, of one kind or another.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,783 ✭✭✭Hank_Jones

I haven't got much problem with reboots, the way I see it they are basically just franchises and are probably needed in Hollywood to make money for other projects.

But to take a completely original film and just update it,
or re-do it in the English language is just a load of crap to me.

Studios are basically just afraid of taking a chance on something that they aren't sure will make money.
It took 2001 A Space Odyssey 40 years to make back it's money,
still one of the greatest films ever made in my opinion.

How things are done in Hollywood just makes my skin crawl.

By and large, I agree with most of what you're saying but I still think remakes can be worthwhile films.

One of my favourite movies is Assault On Precinct 13, which is a remake of Howard Hawks' excellent Rio Bravo. I love both movies, and I'd hate for there to be no Assault On Precinct 13.
(Also The Thing is for my money one of the greatest horror movies ever, and it too is a remake - of The Thing From Another Planet (or Thing From Another World, it seems to be titled differently in different places)

Anyway, I can definitely see that remakes just for money are awful, but I've enjoyed far too many remakes to dismiss them out of hand.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,857 ✭✭✭indough

assault on precinct 13 is at the very most an adaptation of rio bravo, more inspired by it and definitely not a remake

likewise i wouldnt consider the thing a remake but more inspired by the movie and based on the same source material

assault was also very heavily influenced by night of the living dead

I can dig what you're saying, but I mentioned them specifically because Carpenter called them remakes in an interview I watched a little while ago.
I have no problem looking at them as adaptations personally.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,857 ✭✭✭indough

yep he is well within rights to call them such, but i still wouldnt consider them remakes really

if assault is a remake of rio bravo then rio bravo is a remake of high noon, in which case assault is really a remake of high noon

the point im trying to make so inarticulately is that when a movie differs greatly from the original upon which it was inspired, it ceases to be a true remake - i suppose though there isnt a definite criteria to go on but thats how i see it

on the topic of remakes in general i think it can be a bad thing if a remake is done terribly, as it hurts the chances of a decent new version being made for a while

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 132 ✭✭jeffreylebowski

    indough wrote: »

How do you mean? Do you mean like when a bad remake is made, Hollywood might then shy away from making a decent movie original movie in a similar vein? Like for instance a remake is made of say, The Graduate and it's really bad, that might prevent a movie getting greenlit that deals with some of the same stuff?

If that's what you mean I think I get you, sometimes the "Slot" is used up by a remake instead of something new.

I'd rather see new and original movies made than remakes any day, but yeah I still rate them as potentially worthwhile.

I know what you mean about adaptation vs remake, I think it's one of those things that different people will interpret different ways. For example I read somewhere that Howard Hawks said he wanted to remake High Noon because he hated how the Marshall is going around begging for help. (Sherriff Chance's refusal to ask for help in Rio Bravo became a kind of continuous joke about that)
But my point is: I think sometimes a movie can be called a remake by one person and an adaptation by another.
I think what you said about changes made to the original makes sense.
(Ps, I wasn't trying to be smart by quoting the director again, I was just amused at the coincidence that I'd just mentioned a Carpenter interview and I remembered a Hawks interview on a similar topic!)

no thats not what i meant but i will explain with an example

take the new TV show 'V' (its not a film, but same principle), i liked the original but it was dated and a remake was not such a bad idea

the problem is the remake is utter crap, my point is that now theyve made a crap remake of it there will probably never be a decent one made, and it will be a long time before it happens if they do

i didnt think you were being smart by the way as i knew myself he had said that which is why i used the example :)

Ahh right right, I get you now. And particularly with the case of V, actually... That one broke my heart.

The OP is a troll and as such for the rest of the thread I think we should ignore his blatent attempt to try and stir the pot with his opening post and instead discuss the merits of a remake.

I'm open to the idea of a Commando for the 21st century but I do worry that instead of a gloriously over the top action spectacle we will instead get a bog standard anti-terrorist drama along the lines of Body of Lies.

Anyone debating the op's intentions and in need of proof that he is a troll look no furthur than this gem he posted awhile back:
So the question isn't have you got these on DVD, the question is how many time have you watched them. Seriously, I can't pick a favorite.
I can't imagine how much effort goes into making these movies. I remember after Disaster Movie I couldn't stop singing "I'm Dating Matt Damon" LOL.
Date Movie is to funny, the opening scene with the fat chick dancing around to Milkshake song, I laughed until I was hoarse.
Epic Movie, the Entire movie is Epic.
Meet The Spartans, one big gay joke but an hilarious one at that. None stop laughs.
Disaster Movie, opens with a poop joke, continues to deliver the gold, Iron Man getting crushed was sooooo funny.
When is the next one coming out, the wait is killing me.

ha, sarcasm doesnt translate very well to the internet, unfortunately for the OP

in relation to your point on this remake, i just dont think there is anybody making action movies with that kind of 'dont take yourself too seriously' tone, or at least nobody doing it well (apart from stallone maybe)

i thought body of lies was alright though

There are a number but most are direct to DVD. Stallone does mindless better than anyone else but at the same time there is far more to them than simply brainless fun, Rambo had a serious message at the heart of it and help bring attention to a country which had fallen out of favour with Western media only for renewed interest once Rambo came out.

If someone like Luc Besson were to do a Commando redux then it could be one for the ages. In fact if they want the ultimate action spectacle get the cast of the Expendables, add in Scott Adkins, Michael Dudikoff, etc, throw in some Pierre Morel and Luc Besson and mix till awesomeness ensues.

I enjoyed it but it was quite heavy going and at times it really did drag. Still I'm considering picking it up and giving it a rewatch some time soon.

Scott Adkins is amazing isn't he? And speaking of Scott Adkins... I'd love to see the Commando remake directed by Isaac Florentine. He's been making really solid direct to dvd pictures for a few years now and he's got a real feel for action. (Direct to DVD is just the new b-movie, for me)

Are you being ironic considering how as a comedian I have had material stolen by another comedian much like Louis C.K's Asshole routine was stole by Leary for that song.

You could go along way on this forum if your threads and posts were'nt routinely similiar to those of a troll posting complete crap in order to get a reaction from other users.

Dublindude69, you need to start contributing something to this forum other than sarcastric remarks. This isn't the first time you've been warned about this. We are all getting very tired of your low level trolling at this point.

Darko, try to stick with what you are good at (talking about movies). Don't waste your time with tit for tat.
