Selfish, Inconsiderate, or just Oblivious?

How do you treat fellow human beings? Strangers in particular... Do you care if your actions cause inconvenience to others?

Do you hold the door for people coming behind you? Are you conscious that the things you do may have an impact on other people's lives?

There are a few examples that I've experienced over the last few days, some are not a big deal - but still highlight people's ignorance. Some could have been quite serious, but luckily turned out OK.

This morning I was in the car, it was around 8am - when most people on the roads are in a hurry to get to work etc - & there were 2 cars ahead of me (in a residential area, before coming out onto a main road) The car directly in front of me gently tipped the car in front of it, very slightly.

The guy from the front car stops dead in the middle of the road, blocking it... so he could get out and give out to the person who hit him. Pull in to the side of the road so traffic can pass FFS!

Then in a Centra shop this afternoon, it was lunchtime and there was a long-ish queue for the till. The man being served paid for what he wanted. But decided to put his notes back into his wallet, then open up another part of his wallet for his coins, then put it in his pocket, then pick up his stuff off the counter one by one, all the while holding up the queue.

Fair enough, those 2 examples weren't life-changing or anything, just frustrating.

While cycling home from work last week a car almost side-swiped me and sent me flying. I'm sure the girl driving didn't even realise what she'd just done as she was on the phone - but all it takes is to have a little consideration for people around you.

If everyone was a little more conscious of people around them, we'd all be much happier day to day!

That's double. I hope she's decapitated some day. Same for all tossers holding their phones whilst driving.

Did you say that girl in the car was on a mobile phone? Isn't that against the law? It is in the UK.

Twice while living in clare i was struck by a vehicle.

The first ****er totaled the bike - his wheel well completely swallowed my front wheel and i was forced to leap off. He was pulling into a gas station and had the balls/stupor to pretend nothing had happened. That wound up at the Gardai anyway and I got a nice fat check and a letter of forced apology.

The second a driver glanced me, the side of her van rubbed up against my side. I kept my balance and thought not tooo much of it, but the driver pulled over, got out and asked if I was ok. Anyway I was just glad to see not every motorist was a dick :)

Not all, just some. Unfortunately they're the ones who make the biggest impression on people.

Oh if it were only that easy! :D

Well in my roundabout and too-bored-to-type-it-all-out way I was trying to tell the OP that there are worse things goin' on in the world.

Now I'm off to buy something and then wait as I put all my particulars away in to my wallet as if I were to shove them in to my pocket, they might fall out. I may also forget that it's there and put them in the wash or just don't plain care about your frustration in the queue three places back holding a bottle of coke and wanting change for the bus that you didn't make time for and didn't realise you didn't have the fare.

Generally speaking I dont give a toss about other people. Ive often (well maybe not often!) though if certain people I work with were to get run over by a bus, it wouldnt really affect me on any level. Close family and friends are the only people who 'touch' me.............. cough.

But i do hold the door open, let people off at road junctions etc etc, its just a subconscious thing. Good bringing up, I suppose.

I'm too nice I have been told.

This morning driving to work for anextremely stressfull Audit and still managed to have consideration.

When people let me out into their stream of traffic i make an effort to let them know i appreciate it. I will wave when they let me out and then flash the hazzards once infront of them. This morning i let two people out at one junction and then another one at another junction. Its common manners i think.

Some Pr*** swerved into the gap between me and another car as i was sitting in traffic this morning and once in the lane there wasnt so much as a thank you which immediately causes a rant and a "your welcome" hand gesture!!

Anyway totally agree with OP! Peoples actions affect my mood in the day, if i'm having a sh1ty day and someone lets me out in traffic or lets me go ahead with just milk to pay for instead of their huge basket of shopping, it usually puts a smile on my face. Its the little things!

There is my two cents! Not that anyone cares!!

firstly use your head, the driver had no idea of the damage to their car, a tap can even cost a few hundred euro. he probably stopped to block the offender, there are some scumbags out there who would just drive off, put yourself in his shoes, its just unfortunate it was in traffic. if he pulled over, they may just drive round him and deny the whole thing, worst things have happened.

secondly, a guy paying for his lunch?? picking stuff up one by one?? do you get laid much??? now youre being childish, you probably just stood there rolling your eyes, lighten up, the fact that you felt you had to type about this is ridiculous.

Now, to be fair and impartial the sideswipe, I totally agree with you. the fact that she was on the phone would motivate me to catch her at the lights and give her what for. you could be killed in a second on a bike at that rate, you have a good point there, very stupid driver, F*cking bitch if you ask me!!

    a bit off topic here...................

was on the bus on the way home from town, a lady strugggles with a double buggy, and 3 young kids, she is at the front so needs to get sortd first before anyone else can get off..... tuts and groans from people waiting, I was at the VERY back with about 15 people between us, i tried to get past and wasn't able to(people are deaf to sorry excuse me, can i get by ya there please) ya see the woman is getting embarrassed, then a black lady gets up off her seat and shoves everyone out of the way 'bloody people won't even help their own kind, no wonder there is so much racism here' she then helps the lady off the bus with buggy and kids and gets back on GLARES and SCOWLS at everyone and sits back down.

She got off the same stop as me and I just said fair play to her for helping.

Im not really sure what it proves....... but it made me think alot for the day, since then I always try and help in whatever little way I can

    I despise ignorant inconsiderate people.

Only last night was at a Glen Hansard gig and a guy in the crowd ruined the night for everyone as he kept roaring his yuppie yah head off.

Glen even said at one point: "Your too loud.." trying to make a joke of it but the guy still persisted.

Everyone around was visible pissed off.

Some people are just oblivious to the fact that they are spoliling other people's fun by being rude, obnoxious, loud etc etc

The cinema loud mouths are the worst.

I am probably gonna get attacked for this but cyclist really annoy me!! especially the ones that are so far out their practially in the middle of the road, ok fair enough i understand people that dont have cars have to travel to work and what not and they dont really bother me its the ones that are out cycling in the spandex clothes with their ipods on!!
Now they hold up alot more traffic then the man who got rear ended the other morning!! Maybe i would feel different if i was a cyclist, I do how ever agree it is totally un acceptable to be on a mobile phone while driving its so dangerous and stupid!!

I had the actual pleasure of being side swiped by a woman driver and ended up smashing my ribs off a pedestrian safety barrier which I had to cling to while I waited for traffic to die down. I experienced great consideration from other people as I walked home holding a bloody face, arm and ribs. Thank god there's some thoughful people out there. /Sarcasm

I think everyone should learn what the word ignorant means.

    1. Lacking education or knowledge.
    2. Showing or arising from a lack of education or knowledge: an ignorant mistake.
    3. Unaware or uninformed.

Calling people ignorant in this context assumes they don't know what they were doing or were making a mistake.

I find it too depressing to even contemplate how many minor incidents of selfish behaviour I see in an average month.

For example, a neighbour has a friend who always parks on the path outside his house, forcing you to walk around on the road and as the house is on a sharp bend, you have to be careful especially when you have a buggy.

It's almost like a form of social disability in that it may not even occur to them that they cause inconvenience whereas I usually think twice about things, even petty things like getting back in the car and parking again if you are over the line.

I cycle, I own a car, and at weekends I wear Lycra. I understand why a cyclist will cycle in the middle of the road so someone can see them. Only last weekend I was clipped by an OAP. He didn't even notice. The irony of it was that his fine looking handsome rugby player type son had an obvious brain injury.

I could Victor Meldrew all day about the human race. The neighbour who
    1) seems to piss in an arc so far away from the toilet bowl that it wakes me up in the morning;
    2) parks on the shared garden (of a semi-detached house), who says it's only temporary (three months ago);
    3) parks fully on the footpath (how does he manage to do this), even though a friend in the lane behind us rolls her wheelchair past on the road;
    4) thinks it's normal to put a screaming baby in it's cot outside in the garden while they close to door to the screams.

    I'm bitter...so bitter.

Unfortunately you are right, and the ignorant are breeding. Children aren't being socialised correctly. No one will ask\teach someone to pull up their socks and learn some manners.

What if someone knows all about "correct" manner and etiquette but chooses to ignore them? Such people exist.

Anyway, really what irritates me is to hear people speaking with such a complete lack of relativism. "There's a correct way to act, and if people don't act like that they don't know about it". What determines this "correct way to act" ? I say it's inconsistant with the rest of the post content of people who use this as a first principle.
