Now forgive me for being the one to ask retarded questions here but how is it possible to expend calories that you havent taken on? (i.e if you take 2000 calories how can you burn off more than 2000)

I was speaking figuratively. Average adult consumes 2000 calories per day. More excercise and less calorie intake gives you a figurative -calorie balance,and you lose weight.

I read that some people died of starvation and malnutrition in New York in the 70's for the same reasons. They eliminated more and more foods from their diet until they ate nothing but brown rice, with the intention of eliminating that eventually too. They died first though.
I seem to recall the diet being called macrobiotic, although that is clearly different from the current fad, and a quick google does not confirm the term was used to describe this diet.

edit: Yes it was an early version of the macrobiotic diet
