Is Sky taking up the UPC HD Challenge seriously?

Reason for the topic, is that I have noticed that BBC HD is now on the Irish EPG (just before SKY ARTS 1 if I remember correctly).

Could Imagine that it's just a question of time before we get to see CH4 HD on the EPG as well :)

I believe that Ch.4 HD has an exclusive deal with Sky,

To answer the thread - Sky has HD channel 'gems' , UPC has BBC HD (but thats available FTA) but outside of that its HD choice is limited to Nat Geo/Discovery/ESPN/Bio etc

So is UPC HD a challenge to Sky:
    Channel wise absolutely not
Price wise - maybe, Sky have a premium charge for HD which puts off a lot of customers, however the HD box is free while UPC charges a monthly rental charge and has a very confusing cost structure regarding installation.

Ultimately Until UPC have HD versions of Sky Sports / Movies etc - Sky will be the clear winner

Its Hardly any challenge to Sky HD given the small amount of of present UPC Digital customers who can actually avail of the service.

Well that may be the answer to the question the. Yes, SKY is getting ready for the HD battle with UPC even though UPC doesn't stand a chance against SKY...

Challenge in that they are not the only show in town. TBH until Sky are forced to wholesale their channels at a reasonable price and until UPC extend their HD offerings to include C4, E4, etc then its going to be very hard for UPC to compete on an even basis. UPC are not really allowed to compete on an even playing surface.

Doesn't mean UPC can't report them to the EU competition authorities, who take a very dim view of this sort of thing.

How long do you think that would take to sort out?
