I think those ads are disgrace.

    a) Hunky dory don't sponsor the sport, unlike many firms who do
    b) Its demeaning to the game that it gives the impression that it needs tits to sell it.

Saying that, I nearly got run over when I was looking at one of those ads in Belfast yesterday!

I think they're brilliant, I never tire of looking at scantily clad gals...
    I love 'em!
    Very witty ads too!

I certainly approve. :D I'd like to see more of THAT on the pitch.

Maybe one day, it would get to this level.

And, Hunky Dory do sponsor rugby, although they are a relatively minor sponsor.

I think this advertising campaign is a total abomination, criminal and disgusting.

I drove around north dublin today in the course of my work and didn't see a single one of these billboards...

What the hell is going on, respect please mr Advertiser ..put more adverts up my carbon footprint has gone through the stratosphere.

    ;)

Hmmm, Navan RFC begs to differ...

Thats the only club they sponsor, they don't sponsor the Irish team.

I like looking at the photographs and I do think the ad is both clever and funny. I just don't think its good for the sport or its image.

So, their ad is correct, because Navan RFC are part of "Irish Rugby".

The IRFU never disputed that they supported Irish rugby.

I think it's very good for the sport and the image. It gives it a bit of life and fun.

I agree with zaraba, bit sad and unimaginative having to resort to showing scantily clad women to sell crisps.

    Imagination fail.

I heard somewhere that this marketing campaign is being run by women.

Hardly. My imagination has been working overtime since these posters have gone up :D

i don't like the hunky dory ads... they have about as much to do with rugby/selling crisps as page 3 in red tops have to do with serious investigative journalism...

and it is an imagination fail as far as i'm concerned. i had hoped that society had copped on to the idea that objectifying women stupid enough to pose for shots like those is not helpful in the fight against body issues in our teenage daughters/sisters/neices but apparantly hunky dorys just want to appeal to the kind of lowest common denomonater that their demographic represents... crisp eating cave men :(

[awaits backlash and name calls of ''leftie feminist''...etc etc....]

Like or loathe the ads, feel it adds fun or demeans the sport, feel it demeans women or not, guess what?

The adverts have been a complete success, they have you all talking about them and everyone knows of "The Hunky Dory" ads.

Imagination fail, nope, clever advertising people yep, I'm sure as far as the client is concerned they earned their pay check.

that's the usual line trotted out for a controversial ad campaign. doesn't change the debate about whether the ads were justified or not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,219 ✭✭✭Calina

I suppose it had been too much to hope for a debate on the technical merits of the photography concerned, right?

I confess I have been busy of late and don't read every single post so this sort of went under my radar.

Were the ads effective? Don't know. Increased discussion is one thing; the question is does it lead to increased sales? It'll be a while before we know for certain; in fact we might never be told.

As photographs do they work? Me, I'd say no. I don't look at them and see them as high quality advertising shots in the way that some of the Guinness stuff is almost iconic. They'll never be remembered for being great photographs technically in my view.
