    This is a bit surprising.

AUSTIN, Texas - Pistol-packing Texas Gov. Rick Perry has a message for wily coyotes out there: Don't mess with my dog.

Perry told The Associated Press on Tuesday he needed just one shot from the laser-sighted pistol he sometimes carries while jogging to take down a coyote that menaced his puppy during a February run near Austin.

I mean, OK. It's Texas, one of the majority of States where it's legal to carry a pistol with a license. Coyotes do fairly routinely attack family pets, and shooting them is far safer than anything else. But still, the man's the Head of State for some 24 million people. He's got a security detail. Do they not go jogging with him? Can you imagine the report? "Log of Officer Smith: Failed to identify and react to threat to governor's party. Critter with sharp teeth snuck past my defence perimeter and the failsafe mechanism (Governor) was engaged."

Then again, there's probably something to it. How many people trying to attack/kidnap a senior politician would think that he was armed? Thinking the only people to worry about were the guys in the suits and earpieces...

I'm not a gun nut by any means, but the threat of kidnapping in the south/southwestern United States is a very real thing. If I am not mistaken, Phoenix Arizona has the second highest kidnapping rate in the World outside of Mexico City (thanks to Mexican drug gangs)

I also live in an area where coyotes were re-introduced to the area. We see them many mornings when the bins are put out, or while walking through the forests in the area. My dog is twice the size of the largest coyote that we have seen. No worries there.

Theres a security detail and then theres the Secret Service. I mean, does he need to have 3 goons, one on the entrance of the park, one in the bushes looking for sexual predators and one jogging alongside him? He's not the president.. Im sure he had the security detail they just didnt have to be holding his fricken hand.

I can reasonably expect to stroll around a charleston county park on my own without anticipating an attack by Grue/Wookies/Islamofascists

Standard jogger's equipment. Commonly used to clear away non-joggers off narrow paths.

Handy small pistol, good for "carry" even with laser.
Perry said he will carry his .380 Ruger — loaded with hollow-point bullets — when jogging on trails because he is afraid of snakes.
    lol
