I was just wondering if anyone on here has any experience working in merchandising roles in London. I am just starting to look there now as I have just about had it with my crappy factory job here and don't feel i have a hope of getting anything better in ireland at the moment!
I am on the reserve band for the temp clerical officer in the council but i guess it would be some miracle to get anything out of that either at the moment..

Also how much of a salary do you need to be on in london, is 22,000 enough?

£22000 can be plenty for some, but could be cutting it fine if you're used to going out a few nights a week...
Travel can be expensive (£100ish for a zone 1 to 2 monthly travel card), rent is extortionate in some places, and going out can be ridiculously expensive (if you're anything like me, anyway)

I'm the last person you want to look for advice from for actually finding a job though:o

I was also thinking of moving to London in search of work.

Would there be any advantage in going over for a week or two first and hand out a few CVs or would you be as well off applying through recruitment agencies and on the net?

lol! at this rate we might all be able to rent a house out and go on the hunt for jobs ;)I'm gonna try recruitment agents first, both ringing them and emailing them, try and set up a few interviews to head over there for! at least im hoping i can do that, would prefer to have something before moving there even though i'm thinking agencies won't love this idea:rolleyes:

Unemployment in london is pretty high, my sister works there, says half her flatmates have lost there job but that could be just trying to put me off moving over, i would say go for it, good luck,

London is in much better shape than Dublin.. well.. for most industries, but particulary thats anything remotely linked to any form of finance.

I'm moving there aswell in September, was interviewing for various places around christmas and managed to get something sorted :)

    Well done!

I'm just curious, how did you manage to get those interviews? Was it through recruitment agencies or did you apply direct?

I take it that you'll be workin in finance?

    Thanks

    Thanks ;)

I applied directly at the time. Some got back to me, some didn't. Ended up getting two offers for two very different roles. And yep, finance based.

So like I said, anything remotely linked to finance and you'll stand a much better chance over there than you will here for the forseeable future.

Did you find any good sites for these jobs? I work in software development and cant find any.

I am looking to move abroad for a few years, to experience life outside Ireland. I have a job here, a very good job that pays well and has loads of pluses. I have nothing bad to say about the company and am happier in my job than 99% of my friends but I am just at that stage in my life where I want a change. It's moreso a lifestyle change than a career change.

Any links for the US would also be welcomed.

There are more opportunities here, but there's also more competition. I used/use jobonline, its aimed at graduates but most of the jobs aren't graduate programs, charityjob, and keep an eye on the big organisations websites.

Gumtree is probably the best site to find a place to stay, south and east are generally cheaper, and transport is good, but it can be a bit of a nightmare in the mornings.

I'm moving to London (Greenwich) at the beginning of June. I was in with the Social Welfare today, they said I should come and see them a week before I move over with my address in London and the address of the nearest jobcentre and they will transfer my JSB over (at the same rate) for 3 months. I have to register with that job centre within a week of arriving and then my JSB will be paid by them into my UK bank account.

I work in I.T. as well but i've been on the dole 5 months and i've grown really apathetic about even wanting to work in Dublin or Ireland. It's too depressing to stay here. I have a few friends in London and i've been over there 5 times this year to make sure I like it enough to live there.

Can't wait to move now! Don't forget there is a London forum on boards.org.uk and they arrange beers for the "ex-pats".

It's comforting to know that there are many others on here thinking along my lines. I haven't had a fulltime job for nearly a year now (IT is my area). I am thinking of either going to London where I have relations and friends or further afield like OZ or NZ around August/ September. It would be great if you could keep us updated on your job progress in London. Best of luck :-)

I hear Oz/NZ are going through a similar downturn in employment.

You'd potentially lose a lot of money if you went there and were unable to find a job. It's also very very difficult to get permanent residency in Australia now. I figure it's safer to go to the UK, keep my dole for 3 months and if - god forbid - I can't find a job there I can come home and go onto JSA. I'm also subletting a room in a friend of a friend's flat. She's just finished her degree so she's going travelling until September. This is pretty much the only time of year you're guaranteed to have a swathe of people on Gumtree looking to sublet a room for 3-4 months!

Has anyone moved over? I am considering it at the moment, not London but the East Midland. Do you need a PRSI number or what their similar number would be or would my irish one work fine? Also bank accounts i doubt you can use your irish account? Is it easy to set one up. Is it just address and ID i would need to set it up.
If someone who has made the move over or anyone who knows what the story is let me know i would be grateful

    Thanks

You need a national insurance number. Think you can get it at jobcentres over there, you need to do an interview.
I'm sure its the same process as here for setting up bank accounts.

Yep you need a national insurance number. It can be a long drawn out process, I remember having nearly a 2hour interview. My brother had to do it 4-5 times after they kept losing paperwork. Until you get it, you'll be taxed at the emergency (higher) tax level.

Bank accounts.. are a bit funny. They have much stricter money laundering laws, so theres a few more checks. If you try to rent a flat through an agency (which is the most common way), they want you to pay with a bank account. But you can't get a bank account without a tenancy agreement (or bills), can be a catch-22. I think I ended up paying the deposit in cash.

friend o fmine moved over in january and it took him 6 days to get his NI number and about 2 months to get the card.

what kid of questions do they ask in the interview?
