You could use about 15 led lamps for the same amount of power that a standard lamp uses

led lamps like the gu 10 and the mr 16 low voltage will fit into most downlighters designed for there incandesant types.
when you pay extra for an led fitting your really paying for the lamp and not the fitting unless it has specific led drivers.
there should be little reason why you cant retrofit existing fittings with led lamps into your existing downlight fittings.
my advice if your going for led is to hold out for a while as companys are still perfecting them because ppl come into us on a weekly basis with improved versions of the gu 10 and low voltage led lights.
they are twice and three times the price of a standard lamp but in theory should last three times longer aswell as saving energy over its long lifetime. what i have noticed is most suppliers will not gaurentee the lamp of fitting for anywhere close to how long thy say it should last.
companys like led on the nangor rd and eci in finglas/cork would be good places to start asking questions. even your local wholesaler should be willing to set up a few differant brands and how you how they look.

Whats the story with putting leds into an existing downlighter system in a house

Will they work well and save energy compared to a normal 35W downlight bulb??

Also are these new range of dimmable LED downlight bulbs any good??

    Thanks.:)

They will be as good as the 35w ye, depends which model you get. They are improving all the time though.

The dimmable are further behind, the Phillips dimmable ones were mentioned on here i think as being good.
