hi, i just noticed the route for the bike section of the joey hannon triathlon and i would advise a lot of caution on the road.
i cycle it everyday going to work and i can be a bit hairy at times, cos of the lack of any hard shoulder.
there are a lot of blind corners so have your wits about you.
good luck to everyone taking part and hope the weather holds up for you!

Cheers for the heads up GarminG.

Do you know if the route is mostly flat or hilly etc...?

    Thanks again

the outward leg is mostly a long steady incline as far as the village of Murroe, nothing too strenous or sharp but its there none the less

after Murroe you have a sharp down hill that should see you most of the way to the turn around point ... once you have this section passed on the way back I suggest into the top ring and enjoy the trip home.

Heres the link from the race briefing - click on 'show elevation' to get a window the same

Shotgunmcos cycled it last w'end and has a description of it in his Budapest training log.

yep, its generally as mitre says, gradually uphill in the first half, the turn for the short course is halfway down the only hill of note, the turn for the longer course in almost as you come into cappamore and yep, slip it onto the big ring on the way back, as its either flat on slightly downhill.

    Hi Guys,

That map is wrong. You do not take the left turn up to Murroe Village. Instead you continue straight, and down passed abington. Zoom in on the map and you will see the actual road appear. The map from the race briefing is wrong, but the written instructions in it is correct. NO LEFT TURN UP TOWARDS MURROE VILLAGE

No offence intended now but what are your credentials i.e. are you involved in the setup or have you confirmed this with the organisers.

Not intended as a slight but I'd just like to know is this your opinion or confirmed?

From talking to people in Limerick Tri club, this is what I have been told.

I am 100% sure in my own mind..... I know this is the way the lads have been cycling the route. However, I will not make a guarantee to you that it is correct.... Though I am pretty sure.

As far as I know, if you zoom in on the map, the actual route goes to
Ballyguy, Ahacore, Abington, and then rejoin the marked route at Cappanouk.

The road up to Murroe is a lesser road with many bad bends and dangerous spots so I am sure the Tri club would not bring the competitors along this route

Also on race briefing it clearly says continue on this road for 20K.

If you know the road, the google map is incorrect. The main road does not go "straight" to Murroe but goes "straight" to abington and onto Cappamore.

To go the route indicated on the map the race briefing would read,
After 10k turn left to Murroe
After 4k on this route take 2nd left at 5 roads crossoads.
Continue to Murroe Village and turn right in village towards cappamore
After 3k take left to cappamore
Turn around at turn around point before cappamore village

The racebriefing does not say this.... Route is simple.... Continue on same road the whole way to cappamore

the written instructions actually reflect what the map says i.e. stay on the R506 (which goes through Murroe on the map) and I've cycled the route twice in the last two weeks and met riders in both directions heading into and out of Murroe!! Could be coincidence

I had wondered alright why it went up the narrower road and didnt stay on the 'main' road

I think I'll email the organisers for confirmation

You are familar with the road so.
The instructions given on race briefing say straight on the whole way to cappamore.
The google map is wrong. The MAIN ROAD continues straight. To go the murroe road you have to turn left "off" this road. This is why I am pretty sure its wrong. But as I said I can't guarentee anything

I presume there's going to be marshalls out on the road too? I mean, it's not as if we're going to be able to have the map on the bike with us!

It's a bit nerve-wracking to hear that the road isn't the safest.

The "unsafe" part is if you go up to the village. As far as I know this is not the way.... The other road is perfectly safe. And on a bank holiday sunday morning won't be much traffic.
Marshalls: This is why I have made a real effort to find out for definite the route. Marshalls and guards will be on the course. It's not worth anything knowing where you going.... Only the dread that the turnaround is actually still pretty far away and over a very tough hill

it has been marked out by someone from the triathlon club in the last few days.it is clearly marked and there are no turn offs.just follow the road for cappamore.

i would not worry about the final hill, its not too long, but it will hurt when u got to turn round at the turn point and go uphill straight away, the only comfort is that the hardest part is in the first half, its gradually downhill as far as the main road at lysnagry, so there is plenty of time to recover a bit.
