Following the king of queens thread I thought I'd mention this.

Granted maybe for the better the repeats aren't constantly shown so I haven't seen it since my teens but I loved it. John litgows over acting made everything, don the cop also had some great lines.

So what did you think? In the days of my wife and kids or two and a half men I think this really raises well above them.

remember i used to watch it when i was younger, anytime i see it now it isnt funny anymore. wouldnt watch it now if it was shown again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,195 ✭✭✭✭Basq

Used to love it back in the day.. but don't know if it's aged particulaly well.

Though bought the complete boxset for €20 last year.. it's available for even less now.. so might give it a rewatch over the Summer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,788 ✭✭✭tvnutz

I bought that boxset for €20 as well and I have watched the first 2 seasons which I think have aged well, some of the episodes are still hilarious. Really good show.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,382 ✭✭✭petes

I watched a few episodes recently and before I watched them I was remembering the series with rose tinted glasses.

A few laughs still but I don't think it has aged particularly well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,081 ✭✭✭ziedth

That's a pity because I remember serious laughing in my youth.

Best to leave it in the past maybe.

Ah I don't agree, it was aged extremely well, much better than alot of shows from the 90s. SciFi(now SyFy) showed it regularly and always made a point of catching it again even though I had seen them all before.

It still has consistent laughs and Dick is one of the best comedy characters of the 90s, he's still class.

i don't understand people saying this show hasn't aged well, it's just as fantastic today as it was when it first aired. One of the finest sitcoms ever produced.

I couldn't stand that asshat with the stupid half-closed eyes so I never managed to watch a full episode of this. I wonder did I miss out.

Yes it is very good, was rewatching it last year when it was on sci-fi ,thought it was very good and aged well.Dick is very good and steals the show.

I don't understand why people reckon it hasn't aged well. Hadn't seen it myself since the 90s and started watching it recently. Dick is still bloody hilarious. Funnier than most modern sitcoms.

Where was this? I never got into it as I was only born in '92 but really want to give it a go! Anywhere online that's cheap?

Afraid not.. everywhere seems to be quite pricey now (£60+)!

Shame as it was regularly available between the €15 - €25 mark.

I loved the one where Dick says "Shut up cunt" to Sally while breaking Tommy's finger.

    No, wait, that was "Dexter".

I used to think Litgow carried this show but I now find him the most annoying.

Later it became surreal, here is joseph gordon-levitt in a dream, who would have thought he would be ready for inception.

    Its on 3e at 5pm.

I think there was an episode of 3rd Rock from the Sun where Dick has to break out of an invisible box which I liked alot because it reminded me of my faveourite show, Prison Break.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,213 ✭✭✭PrettyBoy

I think it's great, used to watch it years ago and have caught a few episodes on 3e recently. John Lithgow is just brilliant, Don the cop is great too. Definitely better than most of the stuff that's on these days.

3e are starting to show this now

I still LOL at it tbh

My fav characters were Tommy and Don

Can you only place one You Tube video in any one Thread?

Is it just me or is everyone unable to see S1E1 on this thread?

You did it incorrectly.. you put in the <embed src> stuff which is for embedding it in web-pages.

To embed it on Boards, you use the code after the video in the Youtube link (v=XXXXXXX where XXXXXX is the video code) between
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TETLN49CUmE

    Would be inserted like this:

Becomes this..

PS - I've had to remove the videos you added though as they contain a full episode, and are still copyrighted material. You've been around long enough to know better Elmo! ;)

YouTube should really take them down! whats the point? While I understand rules surrounding downloading shows but not YouTube. Anyway OTT.

Why did my first video appear using the Embed tag?

You Tube might have a rights deal with the producers.

I always seem to be lucky so since that is how I post all YouTube videos.

Not likely.. and if they did, they certainly wouldn't be on the YouTube channel of an 18 year old with 16 videos (mixture of 3rd Rock and Call of Duty)! ;)
    Elmo wrote: »

Think you might have gotten lucky in that the embed code of the first one was between two YouTube tags so it might have picked up the video code.

Third Rock From the Sun was a very underrated program. Even John Lithgow who played Dick in the series lamented the fact that in the latter part of it's run it was getting shafted in the schedules.

So very many funny moments in it and it was pretty unique amongst American comedies before and since with alot of physical/manic humour, some witty wordplay and just a general sense of fun. The quote that always cracks me up is from the episode where Harry unexpectedly passes his (multiple choice) GED exam and is explaining to the rest of the Solomon clan how he did it (following Tommy's advice) :

A couple of "all the above"
    Not too many of "B"
Easy on the "c"'s , Heavy on the "D"'s
    *In unison with Tommy*
And dont be stingy with the "A"s.!!!!!:D

Might have been underrated over here (The first season started on The End with Barry Murphy). But in the states it won and was nominated for many awards and got 6 seasons.

It one of those comedies that really gets you laughing regardless of how bad the joke is.

Also Dr. Judith Draper was a great character. Ileen Getz who played the part died in 2005 RIP.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,515 ✭✭✭✭briany

Ah yes, Dr. Judith "I'm a very sexual person when I dance" Draper.

I know that Third Rock had a good amount of critical acclaim but I've never gotten the sense that it's remembered in the same way as Seinfeld, Friends, Cheers etc. and I think that was as good as any of those shows and was different to them as well. It's the same thing as King of the Hill. There was a program that was overshadowed by the likes of The Simpsons and South Park, had it's share of critical acclaim but doesn't look like it will be remembered as fondly as those two shows that are living on their legacies as it is and I think that's wrong because it was every bit as good.

Drew Carey would be another sit-com that should be fondly remembered. Cleveland Rocks!

I didn't like it much first time around, but watching it now on 3e and liking it a lot better. I think it has improved with age, and I find it genuinely funny now.

God, I miss the Drew Carey show. I had stomach aches from laughing while watching it sometimes. I have the 1st season on dvd but that seems to be the only one to get a release.

As for 3rd Rock, it made me laugh when I was a teenager and it still does today. I picked up the box set for 20 quid thanks to Bargain Alerts.

Comedy sitcoms today just don't seem to be as good as they were back in the late 90s....or it could just be me getting old.

3rd Rock from the Sun is one of if not the best sitcoms/comedies of all time and has aged extremely well. This show is a million times better than any of the utter crap they put out today.... I will not hear of this blasphemy about not having aged too well. Of course people are entitled to an opinion, but if they say it's not aged too well then their opinion is wrong.

For some reason when I was younger and they were showing the episodes for the first time, I never appreciated it as much as did a bit later on and now. That could be what happened to some people.

It's on the Syfy channel all the time, they re-run it over and over. They used to play about 4-6 episodes a day until recently. Along with Married - With Children, one of the best sitcoms of modern times.

This is one of my favaourite episodes (beautiful Venusian women try to take over planet earth). ;):)

Spin city was good up until most of the original cast left.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,515 ✭✭✭✭briany

The Drew Carey Show and Spin City were both good shows. I used to watch them both but I haven't seen them repeated on TV much recently. Paramount or erm Comedy Central has become terrible in the last while, showing about 12 shows in nauseating rotation plus the same old comedians at the weekend. They should be showing programs like this. I don't know what the politics of the new brand is over there but it's a change for the worse, without a doubt.

Completely forgot about Married - With Children! Used to love it when I was younger, watched it every night after The Simpsons on Sky 1! RTE2 had it on maybe 5 or 6 years ago, but it was at some awkward time like 1AM on a Saturday night. Would love to have the complete series just to watch on a hungover Sunday in bed :)

Drew Carey was great too, only saw it when RTE had it on years ago, would love to see it again.

Back on topic, I have to agree with the majority - 3rd Rock is brilliant and it makes me sad to think that we probably won't get a show like it again. Honestly, Alan from Two and a half men has to be the most annoying character on any sitcom. The show is pretty woeful regardless but every time he opens his mouth I just want to punch the TV!

The only show I watch these days is Entourage, I want to start watching some of the older sitcoms again.

    Married With Children
    3rd Rock
    Drew Carey

Any others I should look into?

    Spin City.
    First two series of Blackadder.
You know about The Simpsons and Father Ted.

Also well worth a look into (you've probably seen most of them):
    Allo Allo.
The King of Queens (might have jumped the shark later on).
    One Foot in the Grave.
    That 70's Show.
    Mr. Bean.
....dare I mention "Keeping Up Appearances"? :p

There are lots of shows that can be funny sometimes: Men Behaving Badly, South Park, Becker, etc.

Allo Allo becomes a bit repetitive

I wouldn't mention Keeping up appearances

This is what bugs me about 3e - since they moved them to the early hours of the morning I have been taping them on the Digital + but with 3e they either start late so you miss end of episode or this week the station went off air early so they did not tape.

Never mind as you said ending half way through S3 and going back to start. Bugs me no end as I was enjoying them. You would wonder what they hell 3e's thinking is.
