I use Deep Heat and Arnica. Deep Heat I use for pulls, strains and that sort of thing. Arnica I use more for impact injuries from MA. I'm not sure I get any benefit from either, tbh

Of course I find that being licked all over by pretty 22 year old blonds is best but for you mere mortals I understand this may not be possible....

This is the type of thing im trying to find out about...
Has it helped your woundedknee ? :D

    Would you recommend ?

It certainly helps and I use it quite regularly on my shins / calves.

Must give that a go myself. I use arnica as it's also natural and I can't seem to use Deep Heat, as I seemto have an allergic reaction to one of its ingredients.

When's the 24 hour race woundedknee?
Did the London pacing go ok?

    Hi KC,
24hr race is now 2 weeks away and that nervous tension is starting. It's feeling like my first ever Marathon all over again.
The pacing in London went well considering the conditions but finished 1 minute ahead of schedule which I wasn't happy with. I started from the Blue start which got a bit messy as all the pens moved forward earlier than they should have. This meant that I was then behind slower runners and walkers from the start. In the later stages of the race the heat took it's toll and I was constantly trying to pass through groups of slower runners and walkers. Not ideal for pacing but a great day.

Best of luck with it. We'll be cheering you on from here.

Thanks. I'm trying to forget about it at the moment (thanks for the reminder KC )

Lol. It'll be great! After your recent 10k win, you're in good shape for a middle distance race, not to mind a 24 hour endurance race. Hopefully you intrepid support crew will keep us posted about your progress.

Must give that a go myself.

Will bring some along to Limerick at the weekend for you Krusty - I know the person who supplies it and if there is any interest could probably encourage the setting up of a Boards discount.

It really is a super product - but I would say that wouldn't I;)

Have used it mixed with Wintergreen in the past. Good combination, you won't feel much pain after it or feel anything at all really.

I'd forgotten about poitin. I've heard of poitin rubs bringing calves (of the bovine rather than leg variety) and even a dog back from the brink. I have a vague recollection of that burning oesophageal feeling when drinking it :o so yea... there's heat involved alright!

Mixed with wintergreen, hardcore old schooler.

It was much more innocent times when it was ok to stand in a mucky field as an 11 year old with barely no clothes on and have a grown man with a only a few teeth in his head and a nice comb over his bald patch who you barely knew rub the bejaysus out of your legs with a mixture of poitin and wintergreen sqwez out of a recycled washing up liquid bottle. No HRM or Garmin back then!

I use Volterol, mainly for muscle strains though not on a regular basis; not sure what its made of smells pretty chemically though, its strong enough stuff. It that what you mean by muscle rub, something you slap on when you've got very tight muscles? Or do you use that other stuff you're on about more regularly? (if so, for what purpose?) just curious

I've used poitin mixed with olive oil for a hamstring injury before a race. It definitely helped, some stink from my legs at the start line though!

I use Tiger Balm but I'm running low on it. Just started using the Zum Rub so first impressions are good. Used it after getting a brutal (in a good way) sports massage. Good on the ol' calves. The physio was trying to import some Arnica Ice which is some kind of equine cooling arnica stuff. Apparently it has a big picture of a horse on the side of it. Nice.

Arnica is fantastic for bruising and to speed up healing. Think the tiger balm is the job myself for heating up muscles.

Not as such - I try to avoid painkillers and ibuprofen is a topical analgesic, as I understand it so it will kill pain but not promote healing, as such. In fact it may make things worse as you may train on an injury that needs rest. Arnica is a natural product that is supposed to promote faster healing of bruises and the like.

Just received some Zum myself. I am a wee bit cynical about this stuff (I apply arnica and deep heat more in hope than expectation) but Zum did wonders for knackered feeling ITBs after the half and I've just put it on my quads and hams now. Early days but I think it's great so far (declaration, I also know the person who distributes it but I genuinely think it's good)

And apparently the shea butter in it makes it a natural sunscreen ;)

It is good stuff amadeus...i got it myself last week.
My left achilles up to my calf just doesnt feel 100% the last while,in the mornings my first 5 mins on my feet were tender, nothing serious but im keeping an eye on it incase it develops into anything.
I have been icing nearly every night and got some anti inflammatory gel - called " diclac " i think pronounced dylack...the tender steps in the morning have diluted somewhat, not as bad.
But during runs i was getting an odd strange feeling in that area.
I applied the Zum at the half yesterday and it did the trick, also smelled lovely, not overpowering at all and went on handy.

Ticks all the boxes for me also.

Actually something I grabbed at the Limerick expo is this. Bandage that you cover with a special liquid that evaporates, this draws heat out from an injury rather than applying cold. I used it to ice my knees last night (yes, I was in a bad way) and it seemed to do what it said on teh tin
