Hey guys.. Got talking to someone from ahasgrah recently and this TV programme came into my head from years back and anyone iv asked since cant remember it but I think its highly unlikely I would just imagine it! Anyway here goes as far as I can remember at the end of the programme a map of the world type thing came up on screen and the voice of an old lady came on and she said something like 'im calling from ahasgrah' and was ringing somewhere like Australia??

Any ideas?? Please dont tell me im imagining this as iv asked so many people I really dont want to think im gone cracked altogether!!

    It was called "The End"

Hosted by Barry Murphy on Friday nights and Sean Moncrieff on Saturday nights - think it was Sean used to do the "Ahascragh" gag.

It was actually very funny, Monday nights right?

I remember a great one monica looley rang Liverpool FC because their supports club confirmed they had been looking at a player who was actually on the sky 1 show dream team. Baptise or something and she rand to say there was a guy in the village by that name and to save face they should say they were after him.

    Very funny iirc.

Monica Looley ringing the White House was my favourite.

The balls on Moncrieff. The CIA have killed for less.

I think Moncrieff is from Ahascragh. At the time it aired, I didn't realise there was such a place until I was down the Wesht some weekend and saw a signpost for it.

    Yeah, he is, pretty much.

Born and lived in London til he was 10 then the family moved back to Ireland to Ahascragh. It's just outside Ballinasloe.

That was part of the joke. So many people thought Ahascragh was a made up place and couldn't possibly exist.

However, another running joke on DFTG involved the penultimate round of the quiz, where Patrick McDonnell was sent on location to ask random people stupid questions. They'd have three answers - a right answer, a wrong answer, and a stupidly ridiculous answer!!! Anyway in one episode they started this round and McDonnell announced "We're here in a little village in the west of Ireland called Ahascragh!" To which I recall the studio audience cheered!

DFTG was a favourite of mine, although it was at its best with the classic Moncrieff-O'Briain-O'Connor line up. The final series with O'Connor, Des Bishop, and Kevin McAleer is best forgotten and at that stage The Panel had really become the spiritual successor of DFTG.
