    Would ye recommend it?

i've moved out of home and into a lovely apartment and i love it. i want to get myself a tv but the tv license is a bill i do not need or want. and also i would very rarely get time to actually watch the tv but i would like to have one all the same.

i wonder, china and japan are very advanced with technology. if i was to google portable dvd player with tv from china would i be able to order something like this? and would such a thing work in ireland.

Get a regular TV, cover it with tin foil (and your head), possibly learn to speak Polish or Russian and Bobs your uncle - your in stealth mode and undetectable.

You are a student from Ireland ..right ?

I am pretty certain you are irish because the first thing you think of is how to get something for nothing.

You post here - where most people pay TV licences - and expect to get advice as to how you can sponge from them.

Now i have some advice for you in your "nice" apartment - get a licence you cheap ba$tard and pay youre fcukin way in the world - it's necessary now that youve "moved out of home".

    Fcukin pillock

To be honest, the internet is your t.v just get a really fast broadband connection, and a massive monitor and you can watch any film or channel you want and guess what? you dont have a t.v :D

tbh I hate paying it too, its one of those things we never question as to why we NEED to pay it. the Irish people are such a push over if you ask me.

although I've got a t.v I actually never ever watch it, the internet is the new place to be and theres no licence to pay for it either.

Might i point something out? You insult Irish people with your opening tirade, saying we want something for nothing, yet go on to suggest most people here pay their licence fee.

This is boards.IE. Most people on here are Irish.

is it really? I mean have you got a source to prove it? not that I'm attacking your post or anything but if that is true, then what about those that only use their tele to look at dvds?

I know a few people who have never paid it in the last few years. Dunno how they get away with it but the manage it. So I assumed that if they can maybe the op might be able to pull it off :)

do they live in a council estate by any chance? I come from the old council estate where I live, and my parents told me there are loads of people without a licence, and nobody ever knocks on their door, reason being the post office crowd are too afraid to go in there. My dad said the last licence man that came knockin on our doors came back to his van only to find it on fire with lads dancing around it like indians.

So I suppose the best advice for the op is to go live in a council estate if he wants to evade the licence man.

incredibly insulting post, absolutely no merit in it whatsoever.

heres advice on how to sponge, get a large lcd monitor and chorus broadband - no licence fee required.

And enjoy your nice new apartment :D

Having never owned a TV I frequently had the TV licence dude visit (nice fellow). I assume this is because I am on some watch list as evading the fee, anyway every-time he arrives I say

    "I don't have a TV"

He then scribbles on a piece of paper and walks away with the usual pleasantries (lovely fellow), so I guess you could chance lying through your teeth?

Do they not only call to people who dont have them ?
(I could be way off the mark, thought they had some system for knowing tho)

Screw em, I reckon if nobody paid it there wouldnt be much they could do.

Double-bluff them by putting a gigantic sigh outside your place saying:

TV LICENSE INSPECTORS: I NEITHER LIKE OR OWN A TELEVISION SET.

Soooooo this thread is all about suggestions for the illegal activity of not paying a tv licence?

In all fairness though, it could be ( seeing as you dont have a t.v and they keep calling ) as harassment could it not?

would you not be better off walking down to their office and saying: ''Look I dont have a T.V leave me alone''?

Not illegal if you go about it the right way as suggested in other posts. :)

I could be wrong on this but i think the inspector has no power of entry meaning that if he call to the door he cant demand to inspect the premises.

Although those ads would be far more effective if the inspector bust down the door swat style or rappelled in through a hole in the ceiling. As it is its a rather mundane looking multilingual civil servant type, hardly enough to strike the fear of god into people.

Not long after I bought my house an inspector called about my tv license......in a lighthearted way I laughed and told him to f*ck off.........not heard a peep from them in 6 years.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 36,634 ✭✭✭✭Ruu_Old

The old white sheet over the telly still works I've been told*, just have your roomate/significant other/friend making a humming noise and make the ding noise. Let the inspector know that your dinner is ready and that you must dash.

    *no such truth

Why not google it before you start a thread on it, OP?

My advice, pay the License like the rest of us who do, and are paying more than we should to cover people like you who want to avoid another bill.

I'd love it if everyone paid as it would be cheaper for all.
