beginner weights help

    My name is Eddie and have been losing weight since december 12th and went from 17 stone 3 pounds to 13 stone 13 pounds as of yesterday.

    I am a member of Westwood and have been going steady since i started my new lifestyle and have mostly been doing interval training on a rower and the bike. Its worked well but when i went back to play sports and i could run alot longer than i used to but im so weak that i was inneffectual. So ive decided to start a weights program hopefully with the help of you guys as ive never lifted a dumbell before!

    After alot of reading ive seen that my diet will be very important to strength training so this is my usual diet.

    Breakfast: Wholegrain toast with poached egg or chickpea patties (delish), green tea and a glass of milk

    Snacks: handful of nuts (almonds,hazel,brazil,)

    Lunch: wrap with grilled chicken, homemade slasa, onion or a tuna sweetcorn salad (no mayo)

    Dinner: all homemade dishes, chilli con carne, bean salads, chicken or turkey salads, tuna/salmon/makarel with tomato salad.

    complete beginner in weights trainin and any help would be greatly appreciated

    my cousin brought that program over for me tonight and its very good, plenty of detail which is needed for a beginner like me! i noticed something during the squat section tho, i have a problem with my thigh bone ( its twisted ) so i have extremely tight hips which means if im to squat id never get to parallel. should i not squat? and is the hip flexor stretch the only one for the hip area?

    Continue to squat. Get a good Physical Therapist or ART guy to work on the area, and aggressively stretch it too.

    If you are only beginning weights training then consult your gym trainer. A regular workout will get you started.
    Bottom line is that at first its all good - you cant go wrong. Dont get distracted by advanced discussion on which is best.

    In the next three months read up on the subject on the net, and think about changing if (a) you are bored, or (b) your are not getting any stonger.

    Measure progress by strenght - not by appearance (appearance is harder to spot).

    Eat 100 % clean and include protein at every meal - buy some whey & take some fish oils.
    After workout - whey and fast acting sugar. then a full nutritious meal 1 hr later.

    The saying goes 'its 1/3 training, 1/3 eating and 1/3 rest.

    Personally I'd ignore most of that post.

    Instead of asking for a program from a gym instructor (which will be generic and boring as hell: nothing more than machine weights and cardio), google Starting Strength and use that program. It will get you right to the important exercises and kick start your body. I did what sfag recommended when I started and wish to this day I'd come on here to ask, as I wasted a lot of time.

    Measure progress not just by strength, but also by the inches. You've done very well with the weight loss so far, so start keeping track of measurements around your body; shoulders, chest, neck, arms, forearms, waist, hips, thighs and calves. You'll see results from all of those.

    No need really for the 'fast acting sugar' in the post workout shake - whey alone is good enough for now.
    With regards diet, sfag is being idiotic - it's a disaster waiting to happen. Few if any can have a 100% perfect diet; aim for 80% or so. Cheat meals are ok in moderation, and you do need them to keep sane. Just don't go overboard, and remember each cheat meal is a small step backward, so don't take two steps backford for each one forward. :P

    Anyone know where to pick up a copy of the Starting Strength Book. Just checked on amazon.co.uk and was about 80 quid for a second hand copy from the states. Does that sound right?

    i did that first and the program he gave me was horrible so did my own interval sprint training instead. ive started the Starting Strength program. Will by a tape measure thing 2mara and take beginnin measurements and will invest in some whey. Any good places to get it?

    No. 80 quid is way too much. Go to amazon.com, I think thats where I got one.

    Here, 30 dollars plus shipping, get practical programming too, its a good companion to SS.

    Know it alls have one creed only and are unable to understand where to place any other advice because you fail to see the context in which it is placed.

    The precise context for you member of densa is as follows:

    The OP’s diet has been posted is already 100% clean. Everything in it is real food.
    Their progress in losing fat has proven they can stick to a diet. This person has a proven track record.
    The same principle applies to gaining lean muscle without the fat. In fact more so.
    80% clean is not clean.
