Maybe they are horrific at reverse parking, and they are to bounce them back of it off walls?

Hey, its as good an explanation as any!

there's a tow bar on the car, maybe it's to stop any scratching when engaging a trailer

It's a Hyundai Sonata. The owner is obviously trying to disguise the hideousness of it

Surely the trailer wouldn't get as far as the back of the car anyway would it? I dunno though.

Bike rack - to avoid scratches?

    Beat me too it

That was going to be my suggestion

I'd say they got them free & thought it would be cool to stick them all over the back of the car.

A bit like the idiots who think it's cool to stick chrome on the brake lights & every line around the car.

I WILL never understand what those chrome strips are for. NEVER!
