hi. i'm new to airsoft, next sunday will be my first skirmish where i will have a look at different airsoft devices and, hopefully, decide which one i want for myself. but for now i would appreciate if you could give me some advice on what and where to buy. I've visited m.i.a. shop, to my surprise they didn't have a big choice as almost all the guns were sold out. Today i'm gonna visit eirsoft, will see what they have in stock:)
I'm looking for a good reliable brand (cyma, jg, gg etc), must be full metal and under 300 euro. Currently my favs are:
    ak 47/74
    m4a1
but would consider anything from assault riffles range.
i've heard a lot of bad things about dboys (even m.i.a. won't deal with them) so please don't offer them to me.
    thanks

Pretty much anything by JG will suit you perfectly.

Also take a look on the adverts thread here - plenty of good gear going for not too much money.

There was a pretty good thread on best AEGs for under €250 about a year ago. I don't think things have changed much since.

You will find most places are struggling to get stock in because of the Chinese new year, and ash-disruption to air travel.

BTW, I don't own a DBoys, but from all I have heard of them you may have been given bad advice about them.

Dboys are grand IMO, are you thinking of classic army sportslines? Now those have an awful rep.

you should give hobby airsoft in rathcoole a look too,you cant go wrong with a JG or any of the G&G range :)

    happy hunting on sunday :)

thanks for your help, lads. I'm not looking for sportlines at all mate.
could you clear out something for me please. i really like the look of mp5. but it is an smg, not assault riffle. at least in real life:). but in the world of airsoft is there any difference in performance ie accuracy, range etc between mp5 and, let's say, ak 47 or m4a1?

Not a jot - bog stock, accuracy is pretty much all the same.

When you get down to it then, most of the accuracy comes down to the barrel length and bore, and quality of the hop up. All these things equal, accuracy should be too.

Bottom line, buy whatever you reckon will look best in the photo's. ;)

just checked eirsoft shop. there's not too big choice at the moment, liked 2 AK made by Kalash. is it a good company? Do they make reliable stuff? The one I was looking at is full metal and wood.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,011 ✭✭✭sliabh

    Kalash = Dboys :-)

They use the Kalash name for their AKs. Their stuff is reputed to be excellent quality. As good as many of the more expensive guns, but a fraction of the price.

Read this review by one of the local boys.

No need to blow your entire 300 budget on an AEG.

Remember... your AEG is just the beginning of your shopping spree. You should be able to get something very decent for €150 and then blow the rest on attachments etc.

like what? i don't really need many attachments. if i buy ak, i just like the look of it as it is. i don't think i will need any scopes as it's only airsoft, not the real thing:) Also i definitely want full metal device, don't like the plastic ones.

Spare mags and a spare battery, that's a good place to start.:)

    Perhaps some eye protection.
    Boots with ankle support.
Spare magazine, possible spare battery & bb's.

You will need some green, brown, speckled or otherwise difficult to see clothing as well to make it harder for people to shoot at you.

Then there is a vest or harness to hold spare mags, batteries, water.

And that is before you get into radios, grenades, etc.

    Welcome to the money pit...

    :-)

:) i forgot about it:) spare mag is around 15 euro, battery around 50, so that's not too much. But yeah, i would prefer to spend less:) Maybe next week i will post in buying and selling section, in case somebody has what i'm looking for. But I will be able to pay only through paypal. As far as i know people here are ok with paypal payments...

    Couple of bits of advice:
1.) Buy stuff as you need it. If you just buy tonnes of stuff that you think you may need, you may find out that you don't need it and it's a waste. but if you wait and only purchase when you need something, much more effective.

2.) Skimping on purchases...buy cheap, buy twice. Spending as little as possible on everything has nasty consequences. Never skimp on protective equipment such as eye protection, as well as slings etc to protect your AEG.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,397 ✭✭✭MerryDespot

I second what Inari said - but also think about the fact that your aeg doesn't work without a battery - and the cheaper aegs come with rubbish batteries (generally) - so I'd recommend a firefox or intellect battery as a spare to add to Inari's list.

You should be able to pick up a decent aeg and accessories to go with it for 300 notes - though there appears to be a problem with stock at the moment thanks to various issues with stuff coming from the far east (ash cloud, backed up orders, time of the year etc). My first aeg was a JG, which I got for about 200 quid - it was very decent and perfect for starting out. Stuff was purchased as I needed it (and in this order):
    1. Aeg, sling and battery.
    2. Camo.
    3. Spare mags (hi caps) and tactical vest to carry the spare mags.
    4. Side arm + holster
5 Decent camo as opposed to the horrible stuff I bought first.
    6 ... and then it became lunacy!!:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 746 ✭✭✭Nonamigo

:) i got a vest 2 weeks ago, today i got camo to start with and just placed my order on jungle boots. only the riffle that's left. spare battery and 2 mags will do for a while i hope:) just can't decide what riffle should i get. As you mentioned the choice of them at the irish shops is not really good now. so i will have to wait for some time or buy it secondhand...

New to airsoft myself and the best advice i can give you is don't buy on impulse. Shop around and go to 3-4 shops first and get a feel for whats out there.

Think about the kind of role you would like to play and buy a AEG that reflects that.

You will also find plenty of really good deals on the forums here for 2nd hand kit as well as some great help from the people.

I went for the M249 Para, nice piece of hardware but its a support gun not for running around with unless your rambo (or think you are)

    Good luck! :)

Ok - here's another thing to consider - what type of loadout are you going for? Is it M4 or AK based?
There are shed-loads of aegs that take STANAG mags (basically, M4/M16 mags). Generally AK mags fit AK types and that's sort of it. Same with G36. Stanag mags fit (and this isn't an exhaustive list):
    M4/M16
L85A2 (if you don't know this gun it's the bullpup rifle used by the british army)
One version of the FAMAS (bullpup rifle used by the french army)
HK416 (Heckler and Koch's upgraded version of the M4)
Sig 556 (basically an american friendly version of the Sig 552, which takes m4 mags)
IMI Tavor (bull pup rifle used by the isreali army).

All of the above are available in airsoft version and have their pros and cons. To my mine, starting off, you're better getting something that takes a stanag mag, as it means that when you get something 'different' (and you will, as sure as it'll rain for 3 months this summer!) you might be able to use the same mag loadout (if it's stanag) instead of having to buy a load more spare mags.

Might not apply - but as someone who is right now working on bodging mags to fit an aeg that I can't get mags for it's something to consider!

I'd actually pretty much disagree with that. Because there's little difference in AEGs in range, accuracy, power and even ammo capacity, with a good all-round gun you can try out all roles, because there's not much predicting ahead of time what's going to float your boat. A nice assault rifle or larger sub-machine gun will work for normal riflemanning, sharpshooting, laying down suppressive fire, clearing rooms and so on. Later if you decide you particularly enjoy sniping or support gunning or whatever you can look for a gun that's more specialised to that role, but for the time being it's best to be able to do everything fairly well than one thing very well and everything else not well at all.

Not easy. Go to Hobby Airsoft's thread in the Airsoft Retailers forum and ask for the manufacturer of specific ones you're interested in. They do a tasty metal and wood AK by CYMA, but that's all I know for sure.

They are a Cybergun distributor which are mainly re-badged models from other manufactures best to ask them in their thread in the retailers section, also there is more info there than on their website. Even better get out to their store & have a feel of the AEG's they have some nice full metal AK's & M4's.

Don't go spending fortune straight off as I can guarantee in 6 months you will be looking at changing your load out. Also if you are thinking of trying to join a team in the future some of them have specific load outs so you need to consider that.

    Whatever you choose happy shooting;)

I found a Galil there and like it a lot. Asked about the manufacturer but no answer so far. Maybe somebody here knows?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,152 ✭✭✭Inari

Give them some time to reply, they'll get around to you. Hobby have excellent (in my opinion and experience) customer service. If you'd like an answer faster, you can always give them a call, or even drop into them. They've a store in Dublin and Kildare.

:) no complaints, i understand that. Just thought someone knows from here:)

does anybody of you, guys, own that Galil thing? Is it any good?

Moggser does, he loves it. It's very hard to find exactly correct magazines for it apparently, but it'll take AK mags, if I'm remembering the conversation correctly. You could try dropping him a line.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 746 ✭✭✭Nonamigo

They sell the mags on their website. If i'm getting Galil I will get a few mags as well, so there shouldn't be a problem:)

take a trip over to strike arms in swords if you are close enough. he is getting in a few G&G gr15s for under 300.
    http://strikearms.com/page8.htm
i think this one is plastic for that price, and the metal one i think he said was 280ish (i dont know if he ordered any of those in)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,532 ✭✭✭Rooky1

You can't go wrong with one of those G&G Raiders!
Just picked one up myself from Hobbyairsoft.
Totally awesome. Shooting at 323fps, great rof.
This is my 5th G&G rifle and I have never had a problem with any of them.
