Barrel adjusters on front mechs (SRAM)

I was following the Park instructions for front mech adjustment last night, and found references to using a barrel adjuster to adjust cable tension.

It may have been alcohol interference, but I could not find a barrel adjuster for the front anywhere.

Is this normal? It's a right PITA having to adjust cable tension using the pinch bolt. I think I have have two barrel adjusters for the rear.

Shimano don't have 'em on the front derailleur either. I use the one on the frame.

They're traditionally on the headtube or on the downtube shifter bosses but I would guess that some modern frames just have cable stops and no adjusters.

Well I've got a barrel adjuster for both front & rear on the down tube, but my mates Cervelo RS has none for either !

You could put one of those inline Jagwire ones though, should do the trick nicely.

On the sram road gear, they are inline on the gear outer casing, just after the shifter, infront of the centre of the bars.

So (stupid question) I have to strip off the bar tape to tune the cable tension?

No they are inline with the outer gear cable housing. like follow where the cable comes out and you should see a inline adjuster. Sorry I was very vague in the above post.

Do you see the adjusters in this picture? Presumably you should have them too.

Nobody has them on the front mech. You use the ones on the downtube.

Ah, no I don't. They look bloody ugly there, so I'm not too bothered.

I guess I can just add one to the downtube.

    Ritchey Cable Tension Barrel Adjusters

Gear Cable Barrel Adjuster for Road Bikes

Will either of these work? I love the comically small picture in the second one.

    Found another one, no pic.

SRAM Rival/Force Cable Downtube Barrel Adjuster (R/L) 2010

    £18.90

I don't think those will will. They (AFAIK) are intended to be used inline like the sram ones you failed to install (exposed shimano gear cables only I think). The other ones look right though.

The second ones you linked too are what you need, on the downtube. I've not seen any inline ones come as standard on any SRAM stuff, and certainly never got any with my groupset (though that was Rival, so maybe it doesn't count).

What have you currently got on the downtube -seems strange there's none there

    Nothing, just the cable stops.

Postage from on-one is £15, so a trip to an LBS may be in order.

On the down tube is normal and this is where they are on my road bikes/tourer etc.

On my cross bike though I have them on the cables just where they exit the shifter; this is how the groupset came from your own Focus Mares. Suits as at least the rear goes across the top tube.

The ones on the cross bike are like these.

Good luck on that! They never arrived with my PX, so I took em off the Focus, and when I tried to find replacements for that, I had to get them off a kindly soul who had spares -couldn't find a bike shop that had them (though I *think* AstraMonti did)

I also got none with my planet x, David in Joe Dalys provided me with a set though.

I'm using those. They sit into the downtube stops but would probably also sit into the shifters themselves. I find they get tugged when I turn the wheel too much but maybe my cable sleeves are too short.
