Have a Mac G5 here, when it boots it just hangs on a grey screen. It had the folder and question image for a while but no it's just a grey screen. I don't seem to be able to boot to any cd. When I hold down c the disk drive opens but it just continues to grey screen. Same with safe mode. I'm pretty sure its a hard drive issue. When plugged into a windows based pc it just spins down.

    Any help?

If it's a hard drive issue you should be able to boot from the install disc.

I had the same problem with my dads old iBook not too long ago. Ended up finding out I had a disk0s3 i/o error. Had to re-install the OS. It may just be a temp fix though. Some of my steps are in the link below.

It does sound as if the hard drive is preventing the G5 from booting, I've seen this may times. If you remove the side door and the clear plastic enclosure you should see the hard drive bays in the top right . Remove the power cable & SATA cable from the hard drive. Restart hold C and try to boot from CD or restart without a cd and see if you then get a flashing "?". If this works it's your hard drive I'm afraid.
