Report in Indo this morning that NCT should give a free test if you're waiting 4 week

As the title states, the NCT are supposed to give a free car test if you're waiting more than 4 weeks. I booked my test online on the 2 July last year and the earliest date they could give me was 7 November. No mention of a free test at any point and I had to pay the 49 euro.

Anyone know if the Indo's report true before I make a tit of myself complaining to the NCT?

That said, claiming back for a test 10 months ago may be a bit much.

theres a recent thread on this here, but i think its only if you mention it before you take the test that you get it free. They normally somehow manage to find a day within the 4 weeks if you quote the "free test" bit though. I doubt youd get refunded for a test taken months ago tbh

They keep it quiet then don't they?

I was waiting four months for my test and was stopped twice at checkpoints by the Gardai during that time because I didn't have a NCT disc. Luckily I had a print out confirming the date of my test and the Guards I met were reasonable so no penalty points.

I suppose they could wriggle out of their obligation to test you within four weeks by offering someone living in Dublin a test in Cork.

Their wording might be a bit misleading on this one. I think that they just have to give you any date within 4 weeks; not that the test itself has to be within 4 weeks.

Jeez it must have taken the Indo over 2 weeks to receive a copy of the irish mail on sunday from 11th april :D

This was covered a few times on here recently and i have to say that from what ive read i believe it to be that you have to get the test done within 4 weeks not that they have to give you a date.

    Just found this:
"Any customer who contacts NCTS and requests a test should be offered a test within 28 days, unless they request a later date to suit a particular time of day for example" said Road Safety Authority communications manager, Brian Farrell.

"In some cases no appropriate slot is available on the day of request, In that case generally the request is fulfilled the following day, once the next set of unconfirmed provisional booking slots are freed up and the test can be booked within the requisite period.

If the test request cannot be fulfilled at that stage, the customer is entitled to a free test" he said.

I decided not to start another thread but throw this in here.

Back in early Feb (or late Jan) I rang up for test for Arklow test centre.
The letter arrived with appointment for Dean's Grange. This car has had all its tests in Arklow.

25th Feb I rang to cancel that.
Letter dated 10th March gave me test 9am Sunday 28th March.
This ended up not suiting and I rang on 22nd March to cancel and get a booking.
I was advised no slots available it'll be done by letter.
The letter arrived today dated 27th April for a test on 22nd July

    I despair...

    :)
    Now a third time!

I said I needed one much sooner
"not a problem" was the reply but she couldn't give me one...

I get it by text or letter...

Here's hoping it doesn't coincide with hospital oppointments etc...

Letter last Friday to give me a test on July 30th (NCT is up in July).
I have been on to customer service (1890200670) and they are going to get back to me if there is a cancellation in Cahir or Little Island.
If I don't hear within a fortnight I'm trying the free option, see how I get on.

Looked at GF's car and NCT is out by 2 weeks. No letter from them etc. I booked online for Northpoint1 which is 5th of July. If I call and meantion free test will they give me one any where in the country within 4 weeks?

Any one know why they did not send a reminder letter?

    Many thanks

p.s. I really dislike them. tried to fail me on license plate which passed 6 time already with same one. I had to ask for manager and give out **** before they would change it.
