    Hello :)

I remember Reading on boards that someone got €100 from Amazon after Sony brought outthe updates to removed the OS feature.

I just read a post there saying someone got their full money back from Xtra-Vision,and I just want to ask how did it all go for then (what did they have to do to get a refund)

I myself bought the original ps3,weeks after it came out in Xtra Vision, and somehow I still have the box and receipt :)

    thanks

Well I don't know about anyone else, but I bought my PS3 in GAME in the north.
I sent GAME customer services an email stating that I used the Other OS functionality quite regularly (which I actually did) and that I wanted to know how they where going to go about providing compensation.

    This was their response:

I can confirm that GAME are not in a position to offer a refund for your PS3 console.

Upon setup of your PS3 console you would have agreed to a set of Terms and conditions, it is in these Terms and Conditions that Sony did make provisions to effect an upgrade that could cause a loss of functionality. If you refer to Paragraph 10 of the Playstation Network Terms of Service and User agreement you will be able to see the full details.

It is consumer choice when it comes to accepting updates, if you choose not to update your console then GAME cannot be held responsible for loss of functionality.

You may wish to contact Sony, 08447 360 595 with regards to this issue who may be able to assist you further on this occasion.

I can understand why the retailer shouldn't lose out, but law is law and the product no longer matches the description it was sold as. I think if this was a wider used piece of functionality there would be more uproar about it but that shouldn't make a difference.

This means that since the consoles launch, it has lost:
    • The emotion engine (Backwards Compatibility)
    • 2 USB ports
    • Super Audio CD support
    • Card readers
    • Other Os support
And what has it really gained? A useless add box to show you what they are selling.

If things progress at this rate you will see more people jumping ship to xbox before sony remove the use of wireless controllers, HDMI and blu-ray.

Not one of those three things you mentioned enables you to play pirated games on your PS3 though.

The other things you mentioned besides the other OS were removed to reduce the manufacturing cost of the console which has led to price drops etc. Which is why the PS3 is now €300 not €600. It's not like Sony came over in the middle of the night and stuck chewing gum in two of the usb slots on your older console. Removing the Other OS option was a drastic sweeping step to prevent piracy on the PS3. Ethically it might not be sound but from a business perspective it makes sense. Your issue is with Geohot not Sony.

Geohot has "other OS" working on a 3.21 update

Correct me if I'm wrong, but was this not an optional update.
You did not have to update your PS3 and you would have kept your OS working.

you wouldn't have been able to play online then

Yeah it basically was a forced update,no online would just be crap.

Maybe I should email xtra vision(if they do have an email
    address,sure there is).

You could also argue that because of the "optional" update you lost a feature and without the update you lost a few features. Free online gaming and ability to play new games. So either way you are loosing out on some features that where sold to you no matter what choice you made.
