Nasty Virus

Hey all, I've just be tasked with fixing my mates girlfriends laptop.

So the problem is, the virus starts up with Windows. After you log on, you get a message saying your virus software is out of date and you have viruses, then a scanner comes up and says you have 42 viruses.

All i can use is the Internet, all other .exe files don't run. Also when i go to websites that offer scans I'm told the website isn't safe, but it is safe.

I can't remove it, i had a similar virus on my desktop and was able to remove it through an on-line scan but this virus doesn't allow me on these sites.

Also are these possible solutions
1 Running a system restore in safe mode

can you rename any tools to svchost.com and run them that way ?

How do i do that?

download any tools like mbam.exe, right click on them and click rename

name it as svchost.com


then try run them in safe mode


work ?

Copy her Data onto an external HD and rebuild including a full HD format.

- Always easier to reinstall an OS and download Drivers from the Manufacturers Site than to sweat it out for hours against a virus which, at the end of the day when you think you are done, may or may not be gone.

If the Laptop build is a couple of years old it'll often run twice as quick also....

Someone said to me today, returnig it to factory settings would work but i was very unsure of that idea

Its not difficult to do - But you would need to make a cup of tea and settle down to 30 mins of reading up on your topic.

- Also aside from failing to back up her Data completely; You can try or retry this process indefinitely without causing any major harm.

I should have mentioned earlier that she prob. has a drivers CD(s) which would save you downloading them - Although that said the latest one should be online....

You can try Rkill

Use that to shut down the virus
Then do a full scan with Malwarebytes and remove all it finds
http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/

That should remove your problems and free up your PC.

PS: if you can't download those on your PC, do it on another PC, burn it to CD or use a thumbdrive, then install them on the problem PC
