Car service costs

    Hi all,

Curious to know your thoughts on the cost of a 50k service on a BMW - service to include oil change and filters, checking lights etc. What is a reasonable rate for a garage to charge for this work?

I realise a BMW dealer may charge a whole lot more, but I'm seeing car service rates for €99 pop up in a lot of places and wonder how much value is in this €99 service.

    Thanks for your input

What kind of BMW is it?
The oil required, along with plugs and filters could cost almost than €99 so IMO the service you would get for this money would not be good for the car!
Can you DIY the oil services?

dont even dream of getting a 99 euro service on your car. there is no such thing for a bmw. all these quick fit places advertise 99 euro to get you in the door. if there trying to stay close to the quote they do fup all and most will try and sell sell sell. eg your need wiper blades your front shocks arent great, you need discs and pads, whens the last time you had your tracking done so on and so on. to price this job correctly youd need to know the previous service history of the car. also it depends weather inspection 1 or 2 is due. and please remember these cars take fully syntetic oil. most places will only put 10w/40 in.(just see how long it is before you need a timing chain kit putting the wrong oil in) you didnt say what model it is but ill take for granted its a 318i. if you tell the model and milage and any previous work carried out i can give you a better idea. but expect to pay anywhere from 150-250 if you want it done properly.

ps last guy i knew who brought his car to a quick fit garage for a free check was told he needed 3 tyres front pads and discs and front shocks. i fitted front pads and one tyres.

Checking lights...Jesus it no wonder people get ripped off in this country. Turn the lights on and stand outside the car, if the light are on, they work if they aren't they don't, you don't need a garage to tell you that.
Besides any recent BMW will display on the dash if a bulb is gone.

That gives no indication of what was actually required. Changing what needs doing in the short term(to pass nct etc) and changing what will not last until the next scheduled service(you always have to assume that a customer will not check their car between services) are two different things.

@OP the price on the service would depend on the type of plugs fitted, they type of service that is due etc etc.

Most BMW dealers now have a fixed price service menu I think.

Worth popping in to your local BMW dealer as it might be a lot less than you think, and you know they will be doing what is required by the service schedule.

If you do leave it with them, make sure to tell them not to replace anything without authorisation - and if they do, you won't be paying for any un-authorised work.

If there is a lot that needs doing outside of the standard service they will advise, then you can take that list to a good independant to do the work at a lower cost.
