    Hi guys,

I am a part time runner that does random distances in generally good times. I am planning on doing the Dublin marathon this year but I don't have a training schedule and not sure how many miles i should be doing a week. Does anyone have a good schedule I can follow or good websites that I could refer to?

    Thanks

Somebody is getting serious ! Myself and Macker have already registered for Dublin 2010, we can try and do our long runs together. I reckon Stephen will do it too. We didn't use any training schedule last year and really paid for it over the last 8 miles. As Gerard said Hal Higdon is a good Schedule to follow. Looking forward to kicking your ass in Belfast relay on Monday. :D

I am using Hal Higdon and running my first Marathon in Newry on 31st of May but the Newry Marathon Website also has a training schedule that is shorter in duration and goes up to 24 miles training runs. Someone told me here are not enough long runs in Higdon's although I am finding there are more than enough. I am lucky that I have 2 spare weeks as I started early to allow for injury so I am going to slip another 18 and 22 miler in before I taper
2010 14 week get you round Newry Marathon programme at http://www.newrycitymarathon.com/training/index1.asp

Thanks Jimh. What times are you aiming for?

I like the Newry City training programme but I can't believe in your first week there is a half marathon. Looks tougher than Hal Higdon but I don't see any strength work which I think I'll bring in. Did you do any?

Best of luck in Newry. Would good know how the training has worked out.

It took me 3.30 to do 20 miles last week so anything under 4.30 for the 26 would be great. If I do it again I would like to get down to 13.5 stone and aim for sub 4hrs but not this year.
I did one day a week in the gym but it was mainly cycling/step/rowing with a little leg work but only 1 hour total.
Leg strength has never been a problem - keeping weight off is always the issue.

If I do a race at the weekend during a weekend what kind of break should I take from my Marathon training?

There's a thread here for novices training for Dublin, why not join in?

Have you started a training programme already? Which week are you on? How long is the race this weekend, and what does your programme say you should be running?

(What is it anyway, a 21 week programme? Dublin is 19/20 weeks away...)

I haven't started training just yet but I have been doing cycling/running races on and off. I'm planning to start at week 4 of Hal's Advanced program and work towards the DCM from there. I really enjoy racing and have entered each of the Adidas series but fear that these races may interfere with my DCM training.

    Any thoughts?

If you're capable of starting training for your first marathon with a 35 mile week (4 on hills, 6 at pace), you should be able to manage the race series.

This sounds a bit odd to me. You're a part time runner and are about to throw yourself into a training plan that involves running 6 days out of 7? The hardest thing about a marathon is the training which can feel pretty relentless. I'd advise being quite careful about this and pick a training plan that you're sure you can keep with. If you end up missing out on sessions you'll find yourself frustrated and will inevitably be caught out on race day.

I'm not saying that you shouldn't do the advanced plan - just be aware of what you're signing up for. Good luck!

Thanks Macinalli for the advice I sometimes can push myself too far. I am starting at week 4 of Advanced mainly due to time constraints due other events I am partaking (200KM Wicklow cycle, IMRA races, Carlingford lough endurance challenge). I plan to put 100% of my efforts into DCM training once the CLEC is over. Agreed that the training looks pretty intensive but my fitness is pretty good and fingers crossed.

So the question really is should I be taking days off to prepare for the Adidas series or should I just take them as training days?
