Any experiences of buying up North?

I'm seriously looking at purchasing up North and I was looking at one particular car. I happened to be taking to the salesman today regarding the car and asked his what his lowest price was. Obviously he going to try and play hardball to see how far he could get.

The car is priced up at 12995 (recently knocked down from 13995) and he was willing (reluctantly) to go to 12,800 and no more. Is this normal practice for dealers up North?

    Anyone had any experiences?

As in any country, the available discount is a function of how competitively priced the car is to start with. Is the car worth €12,800.

Both in the UK and NI they are all priced around that. However I was expecting a bit more than 200 quid of a discount. I'd be willing to buy it for £12500.

The brits dont give the discount like paddy for straight sale. The price is the price, bit ignorant i thought i love a good haggle:)

I wasn't aware of that to be honest. I thought that there would be some leeway (more than £200).

I'm not used used to this haggling lark at all because I don't change that often. Percentage wise what is the situation on haggling here?

Obviously your buying straight you would be talkin a grand of most garages, some of the other lads can elaborate on this. I was buying a car for my missus and seen a passat on car giant, i phoned them up and asked them best price and he told me that was the price and their was a 90 pound administration charge on top of it.

forget percentages, if its good value buy it, if not go somewhere else. Some dealers will add a bit on to take off, from my own experience in the north this doesnt happen. As posted already the price is the price and there is very little discount given.

I bought a car last year advertised for 13,750 pounds and i think i only got 250 off. But knowing that the car was excellent value to start with did the deal there and then.

The car is a 08 Grand Picasso 1.6l diesel. To be honest with a bit of haggling i'd prob get one for only a couple of hundred euro extra here so it prob wouldn't be worth all the hassle of vrt etc for that much money.

Just make sure that if you're bringing up a bank draft, to only have about 85% of the value of the car in the draft and the remainder in cash.

That way you have some room to haggle.

If you go up with it all in the bank draft, you don't have any means of haggling and the dealer isn't going to give you back any change.. :)

Or, ask the dealer what price he'd do for you if it's all in cash (but be careful you don't get mugged on the way). :)

Exactly. If the car is well priced, they're not going to reduce it much more. If there's room to reduce it, and you can make some worthwhile points, they will.

I did mention to him I had cash and would be willing to deal if all worked out ok. Didn't seem to want to know to be honest. I'm not in an immediate hurry so I'm not that put out over it.

I'll be contacting another crowd tomorrow in the south to see what they can do for me.

The unwritten rule in Ireland is never pay the asking price because they seller is always going to expect a haggle.

If your set on a price you think the car is worth, offer that price and don't budge, within reason of course. If there are similar deals out there and the car has been for sale for a while, the seller will be reluctant for a sale, and knock a few quid off.

Seeing as the car you want to buy is 12k approx, i would be looking for at least 400 off private sale. In Ireland, in a dealership with that much cash and no trade, I would be expecting 1500 euro off.

I wouldnt exhaust all sales down here just yet. With the market the way it is, dealers should bite your hand off for a cash sale, with no trade in.

I probably should have been a bit clearer up above. When I mentioned the 12,995 I was referring to sterling. With the sterling getting stronger by the day the price is only going to get worse.

Yea I have a budget and I'm not willing to go above it.
